gonna warn all of you upfront, this is horribly unfinished. Very much the alpha equivalent of writing. Theres a lot that needs to be edited, and a lot that needs to be added... not to mention the grammar and structure, urgh. But here you go, i guess.
The long horns history started when Beastmen were removed from the list of imperial sanctioned abhumans. Regiments of imperial guard were ordered to purge the ones within their ranks, and space marines were sent to purge the planets they belonged too.
Through mere luck, the space wolves chapter was sent to Kagex'cion, the home of a young species of canid abhumans, that had somehow been lumped in with the goatlike beastmen.
The space wolves watched this species of abhumans, and saw them as sort of a kindred spirit of the fenrisian wolves they admired. This combined with their history of not following through with inquisitions orders; they simply refused to follow through with the purge.
Shortly after this, a regiment of imperial guard was sent to complete the job instead, who were immediately slaughtered by the combination of space wolves, and the natural populace.
Before the inquisition was able to send another chapter of space marines to attempt again, the space wolves opted to mark the planet as a base of recruitment, for new neophytes.
Explaining that these abhumans were close enough to human genome, they were capable of surviving the required surgeries to become a battle brother, as well, as their natural figure meant that the unstable portions of the space wolf gene-seed were not needed, preventing the same flaws that came from the wolf brother’s chapter.
The inquisition knew it was powerless to stop the space wolves at this point, but they kept a constant, scrutinous watch on the space wolves, and their new abhuman friends.
The space wolves eventually grew too large, and needed to create a successor chapter. This combined with the canid abhumans personalities clashing with that of the fenrisian born space wolves, they were split into a new chapter. For the fourth founding.
At this point, the inquisition saw its opportunity to strike, for the inquisition does not like to be crossed.
The chapter was given the name of "longhorns" the name of cattle... Naming the prideful hunters after their prey, as a great insult. Then, they were almost entirely removed from most imperial records.
The longhorns are a non-codex compliant chapter, although not to the extent of their founding chapter.
This is most noticeable in the chapter’s tolerance towards abhumans. A result of them themselves being abhumans. Something that has resulting is a strong distrust between the longhorns, and much of the rest of the imperium.
The chapters constant hatred from much of the imperium helped forge another of its non-codex habits.
One such example of this, is the use of special equipment built by the chapters forge master, without being granted permission from the cult mechanicus.
The chapters regular use of the Aegis pattern bolters, or the empyrean bolter. instead of the much more prevalent godwyn pattern.
The chapter’s sergeants and veterans often make use of mark 6 models of power armor. This also serves to show other battle brothers that they have served for more extended periods of time than the younger battle brothers, using the newer, less distinguished model 7.
A side effect, of the master of the forge’s feud with the adeptus mechanicus, has resulted in the chapter receiving very few special weapons, such as lascannons or plasma guns. As such, the chapter makes much heavier use of bolter patterns.
Even amongst the vehicle companies this is true. Lascannons being largely replaced by storm bolters, mega bolters, or the chapters own creation of combi-heavy bolters.
Other ways in which the chapter discards the codex, is color coded shoulder rims. The chapter retains its grey colored rims regardless of the company. Instead, the way company markings are shown, is through a colored and numbered band on the left arm.
1st Company - Silver
2nd Company - Yellow
3rd Company - Red
4th Company - Green
5th Company - White
6th Company - Orange
7th Company - Purple
8th Company - Grey
9th Company - Blue
the 10th company, of scouts, does not show company coloration.
As a result of abhuman heritage, the longhorns have yet to produce a single librarian. For this reason, the chapter has had to find replacements for the specialist soldiers.
the chapter has trained a larger amount of tech-marines to replace the librarian in his noncombat roles within the fortress-monastery’s librarium.
in combat, they were replaced by the chapter’s unique soldier known as a "divine guard". Who functions similarly to the space wolves’ wolf priest. Although unlike the space wolves, it is lower in rank than the chapter's chaplain.
(The longhorns divine guard, in a manner similar to the space wolves wolf priest… prefers to inspire the battle brothers with memories of great hunters from Kagex'cion, helping them unleash the feral urges.
In addition to this, he replaces the chapter apothecary’s job of harvesting the gene-seed, because the abhuman gene-seed requires different, more careful extraction.)
the chapter’s final difference from the codex-astartes, is its methods for combat. For example, the chapters favorite tactic, involves surrounding the opponent, cutting them off from supply routes, and holding them inside this circle, as artillery reins hell upon the enemy. Just like the Kagex'cion hunters. Who surrounded the prey, before allowing the archers to kill the startled beasts... Any survivors off the barrage are exterminated by a wild charge from the surrounding marines.
Devestator marines of the longhorn chapter, similarly to a standard one, allow up to four members of the squad to carry special equipment. The equipment is chosed based on the mission at hand, but the tools available include
1) Autocannon
2) heavy bolter
3) multi-melta
4) missile launcher
The sergeant of the squad is permitted use of a storm bolter.
Assault marine squads of the Longhorn chapter, have a huge difference when compared to most others. Typically, an assault marine squad makes use of a small bolt pistol and chainsword, as the recoil of a standard godwyn bolter is too much for an astartes jump pack to withhold. However, modifications from the forge master have created the Empyreon pattern bolter. It is Built with much more recoil dampensation, a slower rate of fire, and a more readily accessible side loading magazine to accompany the assault marines of his chapter. This does however rob the assault marines of their close quarters specialization, so up to four members of the squad, and the sergeant, carry the standard chainsword, or an Aegis pattern shotgun.
The call of the deathwatch, is not one that is welcomed by the longhorns. Like many chapters, deathwatch service is viewed as a way of atonment, and not as a great honor, as its supposed to be.
The longhorns and the inquisition have a long standing history of distrust and hatred. The ordo xenos in particular, who attempted to have them purged. Serving the very men who attemtped to have them exterminated is indeed a true test of longhorns loyalty to the imperium of man.
Even more trying than this, is the distrust brought by other space marine chapter's zeal against abhumans. For these chapters to view an abhuman as an equal, it sparks many fires underneath the feet of kill-teams that need to work together. The sparks lead to a full fire more often than they dont.
In one such incident, a battle brother of the red scorpions chapter outright accused the entire longhorn chapter of high heresy for merely existing, and the longhorns who protected them as well. The remaining three members of the kill team had to hold the two battle brothers apart in a show of unusual lack of self-control amongst space marines.
Notable members of the chapter include.
Over the chapters 8 millennia history, only one battle brother has willingly chosen to become a permanent member of the deathwatch. Brother N'gol, a devastator marine, was pleased with the more frequent usage of his skills that the deathwatch allowed of him. As deathwatch service records are a carefully guarded secret, only N'gol himself, and the longhorn chapter master know his exact record. But it is known that he served with great fervor, and was eventually promoted to deathwatch champion, before his life was eventually taken by a genestealer brood lord.
Felix Serrin is the captain of the longhorns chapter master, and the captain of its first company
His exact age has been lost to everyone, including himself; some rumors place him amongst the marines who served beside the space wolves. Others date him far younger, recruited from the civilized parts of kagex'cion. Either way, his combat and leadership prowess is unparalleled through the chapter. He drives fear into his foes and respect into his chapter from his habit of serving in the front lines with the rest of his chapter.
Generals that lead from the rear are considered cowards in his eyes.
Throughout his immeasurably time of service he crafted his own armor and wargear.
Artificer terminator armor based from the tartarus pattern, and a combination use of cyclone missile launchers and his personal assault cannon, given the name "Moloch". With these weapons its believed that he has brought the emperors mercy to more heretics than any other member of the chapter.
However, aside from personal prowess, his strong leadership has guided his own company, and any of the other companies he has taken charge of to victory, He has led against chaos, tau, orks, eldar, necrons, and even stray battles against the tyranids, all with a near flawless record.
Felix survived the massacre that was the orison of entropy, only through the virtue of having been commanding the ground forces on Flir, though many if not all of the chapter believe that there could have been a victory aboard the space hulk had he been in charge
Cobalt and Astaroth are a duo of venerable dreadnoughts of the Longhorn first company.
They were brothers who were recruited amongst the earliest of the chapter, and both served alongside the space wolves prior to the founding of the longhorns. After the neophyte training cobalt took the path of a tactical marine, and astaroth that of an assault marine. The two of them had poor performance when separated, but together they proved lethal beyond the average battle brother. Their sibling rivalry seemed to drive them further and harder.
After the founding of the longhorns, they left the space wolves for the new chapter. The duo continued to serve together in the 3rd company for several centuries, given the rank of paladin in their respective squads. constantly growing in prowess to outdo the other, before they were given the status of veteran and moved to the first company.
It was several centuries later before cobalt was shot down on an assault against the chaos held world of Aldarun. This sight drove Astaroth into a berserker fury, this bloody rage brought the deaths of immeasurable amounts of chaos, before he too was brought down.
Following the victory, both of them were put in the shell of dreadnoughts. Astaroth was given an ironclad, and Cobalt a hellfire.
The two of them continue to serve in the longhorns, always as a pair, even now.
The longhorn 2nd company captain, and master of marches, is Josephar.
Josephar has a great deal of respect amongst the men of the chapter, because despite his venerated rank and title, he treats himself as no more special than any of the other marines, he even considers neophytes his equals on the battlefield.
Eager to prove his loyalty to the men, his power armor can hardly be considered artificer, as every other captains. Instead he chose the path many longhorn astartus paladins do, using the older model VI pattern power armor, albeit with heavily reinforced plating, as the only way to differentiate himself from them.
Josephar has two master-vox attached to the back of his suit allowing him to rapidly distribute orders to his men, from the field he serves beside them on
Ventrious is the serving captain of the longhorn 8th company, he was gifted the title of "lord executioner" along with his rank. A title he has proven himself of on numerous occasion.
His devout loyalty and fearlessness has even made commissars squirm in his presence. Ventrious has not been shy of even executing marines that show cowardice. Because of this, the longhorns 8th company is one of the most brutal. For both, recruits, and foes.
Like many of the longhorns assault marines, Ventrious chooses to use the empyrean pattern bolter instead of a melee weapon. His precision with the weapon is renouned throughout the chapter. Ventrious granted the bolter's machine spirit the name of "Herod's gaze".
Ventrious's artificer power armor is heavily adorned with grim tokens of his fallen foes, pieces of bones rattle across his frame with every step, the scent of the blood he marks his pauldrons with floods any room he enters and chunks of armor ripped from his foes haphazardly reinforce his defence.
This violent appearence in addition to his extreme, almost psychotic dedication, has brought the ire of many onlookers of noble families and other chapters, though very few dare comment on it
Astidirog is the chapters master of the forge, and artisan behind the chapters many unique weapons.
Astidirog broke the pact all astartes make with the machine cult, and self-produced them in the thousands. Crafting each one delicately and with master precision and granting each one their own machine spirit. Blessing each gun with the purest of rituals and rights, before wrapping them within the gentle comfort of astidirog's own purity seal.
Finally he gifted them the name of the fortress monastery where they were designed "aegis pattern" to his most prized of bolters and shotguns. With his assault bolters taking the name of his tower in the aegis of dawn, the empyrean forge.
While these special weapons are guarded with a longhorn marines life, delicately cared for and prayed over with extreme fervor, astidirog's passion for his craft, resulted in a longstanding disdain between the mechanicus and the longhorns, with the only forge world willing to serve then is kagex'cions moon of flir. Who only continues to serve the longhorns out of duty and recompense for the destruction of the orison of entropy.
Notable campaigns include
The Orison of entropy was a near planatoid sized space hulk, that appeared out of warp space on direct course to the forge world Flir.
Scanning of the space hulk revealed that it was infested by warriors of chaos. Untold numbers of renegade marines inside, it needed to be stopped. it was far to large to be destroyed by even kagex'cions orbital defense cannons, forcing the longhorns chose to board. The chapters first company made their way into the orison of entropy with haste.
Every single member of the first company lost their lives in the assault, resulting in the remaining chaos marines attacking Flir, Where they were quickly beaten back by the chapters remaining companies on the ground.
The longhorns have considered it a black mark on their history, and a horrible defeat... however, Flir knows, that had it not been for their sacrifice, the planetary defense, and remaining longhorn force never would have been able to repel the remainder of the onslaught.
The 13th bios heavy infantry, was one of the highest decorated regiments in the planets history before its charismatic and talented leader Damian Starr led his regiment to chaos and the teachings of slaanesh.
As soon as his betrayal reached those in power, The longhorns third company were tasked with the extermination of their former comrades in arms.* A task they took solemnly, but without question.
Have detailed knowledge of Damian's battle tactics, he was easily countered, and his regiment was wiped out to the last man
The fortress monastery
The longhorns fortress monastery 'Aegis of the dawn' is a rectangular keep patterned castle. it rests atop the highest mountain on the planet of kagex'cion. Nearly a ninety degree slope on every method of approach besides the main gate.
This long trek up the mountain is heaily guarded by countless numbers of sentry mounted macro cannons, and heavy bolter bunkers, Trained to target anything not registered with the chapters unique genetic code. At the top of the trail, the first gate, made adamantium gate resides. Locked by the same mechanism used by the sentries. Missile batteries line the doors, prepared to make a crater of any would be intruders.
Behind this, is a cultured forest, filled with vicous creatures taken from the moon of cavendar. Blood grass, eager to devour anything not wearing thick power armor, and boneaters prepared to ravage anything that didnt have a bolter ready in defence. Flamethrowers mounted upon the second gate of ceramite keep the beasts in check, preventing overpopulation, and torching anything that managed to get this far at the same time.
beyond this second gate, resides the great hall. A giant statue of the primarch Lemon russ gazes down from door, to view anyone that enters, for their entire journey through the long room. Smaller reliefs of the chapters greatest heroes and veterans line the walls, right beside the medals and awards bestowed to the chapter, to show the visitors this chapters great history, and to bring remembrance to the chapters on serfs and marines.
in the west wing of the Aegis of dawn resides a glorious armory. Filled to the high cieling with imeasurable amounts of ordinance. Grenades, melta guns, bolters, all crafted by the chapters elite master of the forge. At the ege of the armory, a towering pillar that almost pierces the heavens rises. It is the highest of the monasteries towers. Known as "the empyrean forge" This is where the master of the forge and his fellow tech marines reside. Crafting each tool with delicate precision.
To the east, is the cells and dormitories. A Longhorn's cell is usually more complex when compared to the average marines, however still rather barren. Large and spacious, the walls of the cells are often decorated by personal trophies, taken from battle and reffered to as "tokens of the hunt" amongst older members of the chapter, and an award unique to the longhorn chapter. A delicatly crafted bow, always hung above the cell's door. An arrow is nocked for on the string for every thousand years the marine serves. Honor guards and chapter masters often have very large numbers of these arrows nocked. When a longhorn falls in battle, the arrows in his bow are used as the first sticks on his funeral pyre.
above the cells are the dormitories that the chapter serfs reside within, with a few exceptions of special dorms in other sections of the fortress. They are each about the same size as the marines cells, but much more heavily decorated. The serfs of the longhorn chapter are treated quite well, And those serfs who were failed neophytes, are even given a single arrow as acknowledgment of their attempt.
One floor higher, is the guest chambers. Each neatly and lavishly adorned for whoever may be granted permission to visit the aegis of dawn.
