So they can transfer their powers to others... fascinating.

They can, under normal circumstances four of the twelve masters at any given time will choose their successor and transfer their powers at a ceremony to their chosen replacement. The transfer is permanent and generally is not reversed. If a Talwyn master dies and there is no suitable replacement their power will eventually return to The Well, where it can be taken on by a suitable individual as appropriate. Typically a Talwyn master will never surrender their power and it cannot be coerced from them as they are willing to die rather than give it up to someone that will abuse it.

In this case, Lynn does not want it to return to the well, and Topaz is too young to understand and use it well, so she gives it to Chris, who she knows is trained in the use of crystals. Not ideal, but she does not want to risk The Well being compromised.

Lauren was chosen by Lucas, for example, and you can see the traditional process in the prequel comic.

I was wondering if the power would be lost if not given to someone else before death, though I guess letting it go back to this "well" wouldn't be a good idea in this situation either.

The Well is in their capitol city, but she knows the city is falling to the enemy as they speak. She would rather keep it safe than risk the enemy discovering the existence/function of The Well.

So why did she not pass her powers on to her daughter? Why a stranger?

Age and experience, mainly. Topaz is a student and a 15 year old girl at this point. She has not completed the training program, something she will do later under Lauren though not in the traditional schoolroom setting. Lynn knows that Chris has by virtue of his military service and uniform completed the training program for crystal use and that he is at least an adult with some training. She also knows him indirectly since her husband served with him on several missions, such as Zenith and Sierra Point .

Were Topaz a few years older, she may have given them to her. Her destiny however lies with a different style of the craft.

Okay, that makes sense. At least he wasn't a total stranger; that was a little hard to grasp.

Lynn also doesn't want her powers to go back to the Well, as they would if a master dies without passing on their powers. The reason being that since this is the final day of the war when their capitol fell, the Ashurian nation occupied the Talwyn nation and she did not want them to potentially identify the Well. Of course, if there are no inactive masters, the Well is inert.

Had Chris not arrived, she would have had no choice but to give them to Topaz, but she would rather have her daughter not have to deal with that responsibility as well as she knows Chris will take care of her little girl.

There's nothing worse than when you have a strong story that's undermined by faulty logic or plot holes. Suspension of disbelief is one thing. Poor planning is another.

I spent a year doing the prep work for "Last Tale of Yajakali". Everything had to fit and all the loose ends had to be gathered to make that one work. I kick myself for every little bit of shoddiness I see in my older stuff now.
