Lemme compact this for you.
Basically when Isaac died, I don't feel like getting into detail, but he turned into a shadow spirit.
What he didn't know was that being a shadow automatically put him into ownership under the shadow king, which would be CoffeeDoggo's "Nebula"
Now mind you, this is only canon between me and Debo over here, except for Darkie being Isaac. This is not Darkie's actual story.
But anyway he finds that this guy, Nubula, wants to engulf everything in Darkness. There's a reason for that too, not getting into it.
So Darkie doesn't like that. And Nebula is much stronger than him.
"Save the universe" is basically Darkie unknowingly taking his past life, Isaac Adair's, form in attempt to lose the jester look after being told he's to serve Nebula and destroying everything.
So he'd fight Nebula after gaining all his support from his friends after running away from his first encounter with the Shadow King.
However, if he fails to stop Nebula from destroying everything, Isaac would be pulled out of the Shadow shell that made him Darkie, and completely obliterated. Thus, making Darkie something else entirely. Something that would be just a shadow without a spirit to it. Something to just obey Nebula, instead of having a mind of his own.
Not only that, he'd remain an unstable being, having half of him being destroyed.
So instead of smiling with actual happiness behind in, even if it's a pinch.
He's smiling because, that's all he can do now.
He doesn't know who he is anymore.
He barely knows what he is.
He just knows to be a jester to a king.
