steviemaxwellDave flicked his ears as he sighs in frustration, leaning in the back of his chair. The bat knew that there will be some troubles of having the team that he would like to build once he came into the job as a general manager. Considering he was the former head of operations for the OAthelitics, he has been through plenty of bumpy roads. However, this one is extremely different.
His first offseason was a lot more difficult than he thought it would be. With an ignorant feminist Ocelot calling him out on being sexist for having an all male team last year, which is ridiculous since he was not managing the team at time. He had to deal with constant verbal attacks on tweeter from a former Specs lion for days when he decided to let him go, and a genet demanding to be traded because of not getting the opportunity to start this year. Not only that, but the worst of the worst he never thought would happen occurred. The head coach Alan Foster left him high and dry.
The bat was already being overwhelmed by trying to get this team to the next level, now he is just trying to find a replacement. The search was not a successful one, none of the furs he has seen so far has really caught his eye, and the furs he offered the job to has denied it. With the season only a couple of weeks away, he was starting to become desperate.
All of a sudden, there was a knock on the door and it startles Dave a little, since he was lost in thought. The bat gently flicked his ear and began to sigh. “Come in”, he says in a calm tone.
The door slowly opened as a large black feline male enters Dave’s office. He walks over to the chair in front of him and took a seat, placing his paws gently on the edge of the armrests as he stars at the bat with his golden eyes.
There was a few minutes of silence before Walnuts finally broke it. “It’s good that you were able to speak with me today Mr. Onca”, the bat says with a small, nervous smile. “I know that the off season has been a little shaky as of late, but I think you may li-”
“Don’t start with the whole GM business nonsense…” Onca interrupts in a low voice, raising his paw. “We both know neither of us has time for that shit. So cut to the chase.”
The bat clears his throat a little as he straightens the papers on his desk. Dave and Julio never really had a chance to truly discuss one on one with each other. When the big panther was there, so was Foster, and he never really says a lot if anything when the three of them were discussing on future plans. Now that Foster is no longer around, it was a lot more challenging to get everything figured out.
“Well…” Dave says, trying to keep himself calm. “I would like for you to take over the head coaching position for us.”
Julio looked at him as if he was joking. “You can’t be serious…” he scoffs. “Ya mean to tell me all this time… you couldn’t find one fur to do this damn job, and you’re asking me of all the furs to take over?”
Walnuts flicks his ear in aggravation as he sighs a little. “Believe me, I know that this is sudden…”, he says. “But I don’t have a lot of options. With the pre season coming in closer and closer each day. I -need- someone guiding this team to be prepared for the shortened season to come, and the players on this roster is already comfortable with you around. So why not take this opportunity?”
The panther only sighs and shakes his head. “I’m sorry to tell ya this, but I ain’t your guy.” He says as he gets up. “I’ve got my own problems to deal with that I would rather not dish out on this roster.”
As Onca begins to exit, the bat's eyes widen in desperation. Dave know he could not afford to let Julio walk. Without even thinking about the consequences, he quickly got out of his chair and walked over to the panther, grabbing his wrist as he says, “Julio wait…”
Julio turns his head quickly and gives a very mean looking stare at Walnuts, growling heavily under his muzzle, and claws already starting to unsheath. The bat gives a frightened squeak and let go, covering his muzzle from fright and embarrassment. He slowly backed up and try to regain his posture. “Sorry…”, Dave says, lowering his ears.
The panther sighs as he turns around, his claws slowly retracting, showing that he is calming down a little. Something that he has been struggling for quite some time. “No, I’m sorry…”, he says in a more calm tone.
“Look… I know that we haven’t really seen eye to eye during this process.”, Walnuts says. “But I need you, the guys need you… now more than ever. We can’t afford to lose another coach. Please Onca...”
“That may be true Walnuts, but believe me when I say this. I’m not your answer”, Onca says. “You already have the media questioning your decision making, not going after one of those star leveled talents. You really think it’s a good idea to give someone like me the job.”
Dave looks to the side as he leans back on the chair Onca was sitting on. “At this point, I’m willing to take that risk.” the bat says. “I’ve dealt with a lot of bull shit when I was working with OAthletics. Had to go over many obstacles to get where I was before getting this job. I was pretty confident coming into Santa, thinking that I’ll be able to do this with ease… So far not a lot of people have agreed with some of my decisions. Even the person I thought that was going to help me through thick and thin…”
Julio sighs as he crosses his arms, closing his eyes. “Yeah… no one thought that was going to happen.” He admits.
“You know what though… fuck it”, Dave says as he leans back up. “If people want to doubt what I’m doing here, let them. If Santa Ana falls hard, I’ll be the first to admit that it’s on me, but we won’t know that until the season ends. I’ve just started and the media may have their doubts, but I have faith in those furs. We don’t need to have a superstar, this team will still be strong as a unit. really the question here is... do you have faith in this team?”
The panther takes a deep breath and turns back around towards the door, placing his paw on the knob. He looks back to the bat, seeing the despair in Dave’s face. Julio then gives a small smile. “Tell ya what… I won’t be the permanent answer in being the coach… but I’ll play along with being the intermediate head coach. I’ll even help you out with the search myself.”
Dave’s eyes almost lit up with happiness and gave a wide grin as he nods. “Thanks… You really are a life saver.”
The panther exits the office and sighed softly after he closes the door. “I hope you know what you’re doing bat... I’m not liking where this is going.”
