It's all about proper grooming. Us fireproof drakes need a good flaming every year or so. Don't want any combustibles gathering around my scales and in my mane.

That and it feels great, a nice high temp flame blasting your scales clean.

Why not immerse yourselves in a foundry or similar? Or does that introduce contaminants to your scales?

It does horribly. You have to just cut out the globs of iron that solidify in your mane and you get little fleck of iron and slag that stick to your scales. You then have to either buff that out or just wait till you shed those scales.

Just a matter of finding the right metal, something with high cohesion and low adhesion. Impractical to heat a metal bath for one dragon, but if you've an area of high enough dragon population... it's not hard to see a mobile hot-metal bath that tours on an annual circuit. Every dragon in town getting together for a long soak before it packs up and moves on to the next stop.
