During the initial confrontation between Gila, Gecko, Monitor and Spider-Man when they captured Dr Curtis Connors and Mary-Jane Watson, the ‘Engagement Ring’ she was given was pulled loose when she was tackled to the ground, leaving Spidey with no means of being able to track them as they were led through the New York Storm Drains. This resulted in their never finding each other when Mary-Jane was freed to get out of there once Connors starting turning into The Lizard again, so by the time Spider-Man finally caught up to the Lizard Trio - finding them thanks to the noise they were making - The Lizard was already loose again, and had both him and Gila taken prisoner when she refused to take part in his Campaign of Conquest.
The time it took for Mary-Jane to find her way out, and relay the news to Margaret Connors meant that once they returned to try and put a stop to his plans, the Gladiatorial Battle had already ended. Spidey, dead. Gila, injured. Margaret, Mary-Jane, and Debra, imprisoned. The arena floor littered with blood, lab-coat, top, and bits of purple pants, the latter trio belonging to the one who now sat upon the throne, said pants more like shorts now.
“Father? Why did you let them live?” The deep baritone of Monitor questioned, referring to the three imprisoned.
“I have my own planss for them. If ssuccesssful, it will be the first sstep to ending the Human’ss Reign of the Ssurface World.” The Lizard replied, leaning forwards to address another of his children. “Gecko. Asssemble a ssmall team, and be ready to enter the ESssU within the hour.”
Already, his plan was forming in his head. A working Neogenic Recombinator still existed within the ESU, thanks to that weakling Connors’ efforts to rid himself of his Superior Self. Once brought down and connected to the City’s Power Grid, accessible from the Storm Drains, he could finally enact the plan he’d tried and failed to carry out so many months before.
“And before you assk Monitor. Those three I intend to keep as Tesst Ssubjectss. Should my plan ssuccceed, the Humanss won’t be a problem, they’ll, in fact, be joining uss.” Their ‘Father’ explained, even as he considered procuring a new Lab Coat for himself while he was there, there should be one that could fit him. Lacking it made him feel a little, exposed.
An AU from the otherwise forgettable Spider-Man TAS Episode: The Lizard King (S4E10).
Needless to say, one little change rewriting the story to something that I consider far more...interesting. Things won't be looking good for NY I think.
