Boss Monsters give portions of their souls to their children. Assumingly to age the child, while it simultaneously ages the parents.
The theory is that if Toriel and Asgore knew about Asriel, they could continue giving him soul power like before replacing the void in him. That way he could recover and not turn back into a shit flower.

He won't have to be alone if Frisk goes to visit him.
Really there's no reason he can't go back every once in a while ; u;

Asriel would probably destroy the entrance to the Ruins to prevent himself from causing more harm since he thinks he's going to turn back into Flowey.
