THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A MID LEVEL DETAIL IMAGE. In terms of my commissions, this is the high end of mid level, high level would be every scale individually shaded, low would be using a brush or simple gestures to give the illusion of scales. Also, the background is actually based off a picture of Madagascar, because I have no idea what Madagascar looks like.
Xairen (the larger dragon) is the draconic version of
Trey Spyre Most of his anatomy is based off of that of a theropod, specifically an allosaurus, although it's been heavily adapted. The scales took me ages. XP
Phoenix is my dragon sona. Phoenix is also a character in one of my stories, and the irregular body coverings (mix of fur and different types of scales) are because in the story he's in, he has a bit of an issue with shapechanging magic. In summary, he has a smaller form that went by a different name. He hatched looking like that, but eventually he was badly wounded. He was always a powerful shapeshifter, though, and it was partly because of that that his essence/soul was transferred to the body of a brain-dead human. Phoenix's magical abilities and such turned his new body into his current draconic form, which is why it isn't entirely natural-looking.
The anatomy is partly based off of that of a Therizinosaur although his front end is much bulkier and slightly feline anatomically. It took a while to get his skull the right size, but I think it's finally good.
