Ash was very special to me, so she deserved some art. I did this within an hour, and though she deserves more of my time, I didnt want to work outside of my comfort zone with this. She may look a little unproportionate... but I find it difficult to draw a cat who looked like a pear... She was very fat.
Ash, short for Ashley, was named after Bruce Campbell's character in Evil Dead/Army of Darkness. I was able to claim her as my own the very day she was born, seventeen years ago. For the first seven years of her life, things were difficult. My mom never helped me with her care, and also took a majority of my paychecks as a youth, so I was left with very little to take care of her. Her meals were very portioned, and there were a few times she had to fend for herself and get whatever scraps we could give her... There were times I had considered giving her up to a more stable home.
When we moved to Texas to live with my boyfriend (now husband), things got much better for both of us. Ash always had food available, and was able to be a full time inside cat. She took advantage of these comforts, and ate and slept comfortably for her remaining years. While I knew that her weight had become a problem, I figured she deserved whatever she wanted for the hell she went through those first seven years. I did my best to make sure the quality of the food she got was the best, and healthiest, but didnt control the portions, and never left her wondering where the food was at.
Cats are not always known for their loyalty, but Ash was always kind and loving towards me, and never strayed far from me. She came when she was called, and was perfectly fine being cuddled, held, and loved on. If you had a brush in hand, you could easily make quick friends with her.
She was also very brave, having fought off a couple of pit bulls and other dogs in her younger days. She was the boss, and every other animal knew it. Our own dogs did not cross her, one look from her and they went running. If she wanted to sleep in the dogs beds, they had no choice but to let her.
I am sad that our time had to come to an end, but we were always there for each other, and I couldnt be more grateful for her companionship.

My sister's cat Tulip is about this age, but she still demands her time outside and does as she pleases. I used to be scared to death of Tulip, now that I'm not, I dont know why I was so afraid of her.
Ash sounds like a lovely girl, akin to my boy Zero. She was loved and taken great care of to live to her ripe age, and she will be there for you in spirit as well as perhaps guiding another feline into your life to not leave an empty space. My Otacon sent me Zero when he passed barely two weeks after I adopted him, and it was another week or two before I could even try to accept that another cat was there to help me mend after the loss.
Your next friend will be there, once Ash finds them. Ash knows what to look for, she's had her whole life to see what you need without her there.

So very sorry for your loss.
I remember losing my eldest cat of 18 or so years named Spatz. She was the oldest cat I've ever had in my life and loved her dearly as she was a child to me.
She came into my life as a young kitten and quickly became my best friend during my young childhood. Spatz was an outdoor and indoor type cat as she preferred to come in and out of the house whenever she was around. She also loved coming onto my lap to get attention and love while she stretched out her claws on my legs which hurt as they were very sharp!
Spatz became a indoor cat after she began to lose her hearing and could easily be startled due to no longer being able to hear anyone coming onto her. She always called to me if she wanted attention or to be petted then immediately began to purr as she enjoyed getting love from me.
I remember the night before she passed away back in late December 2012. Also she wasn't very active that night and hardly moved around except when I was around to give her company. I remember crying with her that night as I was praying to God that he wouldn't let her suffer anymore and prayed again the next morning just seconds before she died.

Even now in 2020, it's heartening to know that when Spatz's time came you were right there praying for her to find peace and that she passed in your loving company. That's love and loyalty. No human or animal could ask for more. God bless you for your devotion to her. You can take a large measure of a person by how they care for their pets and you, you're good people.
What a great tribute. What a great job you did scraping by to care for her through those early years and getting her to a place of comfort for the next 10. My hat's off to you even 5 years later. To quote my comment on your other post about her,
"Just saw this post but felt it deeply. Been there too many times. It's 5 years after the fact, but never too late to say 17 is a damn good run for a cat and she done good. And hey, her memory lives on because random strangers continue to be moved by it. Cheers to her memory. "
You done good by her.
