he he...I was actually going to name this with the names of those 5 notes, but when I looked for them I got sidetracked and rather than spend all night tracking them down I went with this title.

And now I just found them.
To get the spaceships' attention prior to their arrival at Devil's Tower, the five notes the scientists play are G, A, F, (octave lower) F, C. When they arrive at the tower and are attempting communication, the notes they play are B flat, C, A flat, (octave lower) A flat, E flat.

( I remember. I've seen the Color of Magic movie and read it a couple of times. Read ALL of his Discworld series books at least once. Some several times. Have you ever read his sci-fi novel Strata? If not, I highly recommend it. It's very different and quite good.)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I fully believe in intelligent life out there - some as advanced as or even more so than (supposedly) ourselves. I consider it the height of human arrogance to believe that this is the ONLY one of what, 40 billion Earth-like planets estimated to populate the known cosmos that has life. Being a rabbit of science, tho, I happen to be a subscriber of the Fermi Paradox and the opinion of other astrophysicists and scientists that say the gulf of space is too large and the technology capabilities too small to allow contact. Which, as my dear Dr. Hawking opined, is a good thing; extraterrestrials discovering this world would be akin to Columbus discovering the New World, and we all know how that turned out for said inhabitants of said New World. You are, of course, free to believe as you wish.

I like the theory that we evolved from microbes that were in the garbage left on earth by a picnicing family of aliens eons ago personally.
And the thing about aliens finding and coming to earth being a bad thing for us wouldn't necessarily be so. They may also be advanced enough to know to leave us completely alone and never reveal themselves. Just watch us. That would explain why we haven't had any proof of their being here.

Crap. I was....sort of. I was in Yellowstone then went through Teton and over to Devils Tower, then down to Custer for a couple of days to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse and the caves there. How close was I?

I am so sorry I completely spaced getting in touch with you when planning this trip! I was going to go to RMFC too and got to Denver yesterday morning and got freaked out by the freeway system and split without stopping. I'm back in California now, just over the border from Las Vegas. Got lost going through Las Vegas too. Those big city freeways stress me out WAY too much and I just freak!!! I've been on the road for 3 weeks and I'm actually ready to be home now.
