It's not a carrier, though that's something they do more in the trek video games than the show. The games have a ship called the Valkyrie which does it, and there was one of the games that sent the Excelsior crew to the mirror universe where they had to use fighters....

Is that the one where you play Kirk and Spock and it says it's set between the first and second film? If so, then yes. I didn't like it much, it really didn't set up into Darkness well and it was an okay shooter.
