Summary: The thus-called 'Subots' by some are synthetics of design and origin unknown to modern civilization. What is known about them though is that they are fully sentient machines and are capable of learning, something that most fear yet these machines possess none of the negative traits that most AI are stereotyped with.
General Appearance: Most of the 'newer' synthetics don't have a developed form when first found, rather appearing like a form of turbine of unknown design that is encased in a transparent, roughly spherical-shaped pod, coloration varying between units. The size of these are usually range around a softball up towards a soccer ball. A developed one though can appear drastically different between each member, all taking form according to what they have seen when they first start their development, all averaging around one foot/roughly thirty and a half centimeters in standing height.
Growth and Development: The development cycle of a Subot is a rather odd one to modern science. Most members that are in their 'larval' state are dormant, almost in a hibernation state, all of which rely on the contact of another sentient being to activate. Once they do is when they start to become live, often waiting until after the targeted sentient creature is asleep. When they do fall asleep is when the larval synthetic goes to work, the spherical cell it's in vanishing while the turbine form of it would maneuver over to the back of the creature, pressing against it as a liquid-like metal would start to spread. This would spread to cover roughly the upper torso of the creature, solidifying once a sufficient amount of area has been covered.
This is actually risky for the larval state, since any attempts to remove it will pry it off with ease, but will end up ending the synthetic's life. It's due to this that they take great care to not wake up the creature they're growing onto. This state of vulnerability lasts for a couple of hours, during which the metallic substance will continue to solidify. There is no risk of crushing the one who is, at this point, 'wearing' the synthetic, but once the solidification is complete, it is borderline impossible to remove.
When this process is done, the synthetic would start its 'maturing' phase, which consists of feeding on the physical mass of the one wearing it. This doesn't mean tearing chunks out of the unfortunate one, rather 'liquefying' their mass and consuming it, while keeping their physical shape intact. The process results in the victim being smaller each time the machine feeds, and each time it does would have developed more parts to it. An oddity is that the parts shrink down along with the one wearing the synthetic as it develops, which upon study revealed that the parts are more compact and thus durable. This is also what results in the small stature of their kind, while those inside of them range from a couple inches in size once the Subots body is fully formed.
One 'feature' that relates to the bots assuming their forms is that they will try to replicate it as much as they can. This can range from any number of creatures, from ones like wolves or elephants, to even fictional ones like sergals and kitsunes. Even ones with humanoid builds are possible and – humorously enough – ones with bodies that are bloated with fat. The 'fat' that is replicated is actually packets of a gel-like substance, the 'skin' even mimicking that of most textures of flesh. However, this can affect their end size; Simplistic designs can have a larger overall size, largest recorded up to around two feet standing, while more complex ones are smaller, smallest being four inches. This also affects the sentient creature that's inside as well, also reflecting the final size once the Subot body formation is complete.
Another thing to note that during their development, of the creatures they hold within themselves, gravity would not work normally and make it to where they area always like as though their backs are facing down towards the ground, even when the machine itself is upside down. This is due to a very small gravity generator being present in the pod-like area of the bot, aiding to keep the body of the creature in a preserved state with minimal disturbances to it. By creating the gravity field in the pod, this ensures that even if the machine were to come to a full stop within a second, the insides of the space would not be jostled around by the sudden stop.
Abilities: Though the larval state for all units is the same, the abilities they get upon maturing can vary vastly between each one. One could have a form that allows flight while another could have one that grants much greater swimming capabilities. Shared abilities between their kind is easy mastery of anything technology based, be it mechanical household tools to even manufacturing lines. However, due to their habit of moving away from sources of loud sound, they are not all that often seen in said settings.
Behavior: Despite being far more advanced artificial intelligence and capable of outpacing even supercomputers, each unit display child-like curiosities and personalities, even when their bodies are being formed. This often gets them into trouble in one way or another, either by clumsiness or simple disregard for instructions. They tend to shy away from sources of loud sounds for it messes with audio receptors, even damaging them much like organic creatures.
In terms of aggression though, most – if not all – units don't show any signs of it, opting to flee from threats instead. They're like this due to them developing no weaponry to defend themselves with, the older units declaring that their kind is just for scientific progress of any race they come into contact with.
When it comes to interaction between fully developed Subots and the sentient creature they have released, due to the former's power core having replaced the need for the creature for a power source, they are often-times playful depending on their forms. No instances – aside from fatal choices during development – of them becoming hostile have been noticed, further solidifying the fact of them being a peaceful type of AI race.
Traits: Aside from the abilities they gain from whatever form they assume, they are fully capable of being like a form of computer as well as aiding with anything technologically inclined. However, for those that are encased within them, they are able to tap into the minds of the sentient creature and even fabricate artificial dreams for them to experience for the duration of their stay within the machine. This is done initially to counteract the long waiting period of the machines core development, which ranges up to four months of developing.
The insides of their bodies, more specifically the 'pod' that a sentient creature finds itself in during the construction of the machines body, is one that will keep itself at a stable environment that the creature's tuned towards. This allows said creature to be put in a hibernation state within the space, their body not deteriorating over the long period of inactivity.
During the development of their bodies, the machine would have a form of gland that contains a one-time injections worth of fluid. Said fluid is to help restore their 'host' to their normal size, which would vastly speed up the replication of their mass. At most, the reports of this process ranges from 'extreme discomfort' to 'needles in the skin' painful, but otherwise have shown to do no other harm to those affected.
Injuries and Death: The larval state of all units is where they're the most vulnerable, mainly when they are trying to latch onto a sentient being. The reasoning behind this is that they are spreading themselves to a dangerously thin level when it comes to covering creature in question, and any amount of trauma to them – mainly by the creature attempting to remove the synthetic – before they can solidify can end up being lethal. Simple and slow movements are acceptable during the solidification phase, but any further could be dangerous.
Another factor of death for them is when they have finished forming their bodies but have not fully developed. The sentient beings they have encased within are essential to them, serving as a form of power source – going so far as to compare them to a heart – until a more permanent one is able to develop. Should the sentient creature die before the alternate source is fully created, so too will the unit. This can also be caused when the proportions of the form their assuming is far too small for the sentient creature to fit in. Most of the time they're stored in around the torso area of the forming machine, but they would always try to match the image of the form they were given. This is a fatal flaw for some that ended up picking a form for the Subot that they have without thinking about how much space would be given to them, resulting in the creature being crushed while the machine is forming. It's impossible for a Subot to reverse this process as well, so the form they are to assume has to be picked with great care since it's a one-way track from the start of the machines body being formed to it being finished.
Even a fully developed unit can be harmed, mainly in the form of plates of their chassis popping off when enough force is dealt to them. Even more worrisome is the case of a developed limb being severed, which is nigh-impossible to reattach despite on how advanced they are. Very similarly to organic beings, they will perish if their 'blood' levels – a low-grade acidic liquid of neon coloration ranging from blue to green – reach below critical levels.
Diet: Initially, Subots would rely only on the creature they have within them for sustenance, more so for power that would keep them alive. Once the four month development period has ended and the creature is released, they would not need much else for another six months. It's around then that they would start to develop needs similar to organic creatures, notably hunger and thirst. Like all creatures, each unit would have different tastes, often reflecting those of the creature they once had within them.
Reproduction: No intercourse between units is needed when it comes to creating a new Subot. Instead, one that is considered an 'elder' among their kind, estimated age range currently unknown, they would use parts of themselves to fabricate a larval Subot unit. The time taken to actually make one though can take up towards a week of ceaseless work from the unit making the youth, all to make sure that they would be much like the rest. The protective membrane would be formed last, requiring some of the blood of the creator unit to form it.
This process though may seem small at first, but it's when a Subot elder that feels is close to death that things get rather grim. The unit in question will keep taking itself apart to create as many larval units as it can before perishing to its own wounds. This though slows down their 'bleed out' rate significantly as their blood flows with a greatly increased thickness. The most that one unit has been able to make before succumbing to their wounds is around a dozen larval units, which are dormant like most. They require up to a week after creation before they are able to 'claim' another sentient being, thus starting the life of a Subot anew.

Another species from me? W00t.
Anyway, this species has a starting origin much like the blanket dragons; Spawning from dreams and having their details recalled. Much like the last species, more details were added once I got all I could from remembering them from the dream, even tried to show that this one can have a number of flaws to it as well... >_>
Got nothing else but a Q&A regarding this species down below, since it's one in the morning her as of this submission and writing.

Question: What exactly are these things?
Answer: Spawn of my mind, but a more serious answer is that they're most likely a mix of both biotic and synthetic/robotic components. Cybernetic creatures, if you want to think that.
Q: Some of this stuff doesn't really make sense...
A: This was recalled as best as I could, so cut me some slack...
Q: Can I feature these creatures in a fan story?
A: You can, but be sure to credit me for the species.
Q: Can I also make a character of one?
A: *points to the previous answer*
Q: Will there be any short stories related to the Subots at some point?
A: There might be, but I can't really guarantee it due to my writing urge being reeeeeaaaaal finicky these past few months...
Q: Why the lame name?
A: Hey, it was better than what I previously had; Mano-Machines, something that I found to really be more of a placeholder name than an actual one for the species. You can thank Ziggy-FoxCat on DA for the name.
Q: Any chance of R3--
A: *slaps with a stone hand* No.
More serious answer: Look, I know that R34 is a bit of an inevitable thing when it comes to the internet, but like the last species I made, can we kiiiind of refrain from pornifying them? I know that they're capable of taking on practically any form, but still...
