Deepest fresh lake in the US, 2nd deepest in North America, and 9th deepest in the world, and only 2 hours away from me :)

Funny thing, living so close to it, I only visited it twice.
Of course I took it for granted that I would be in ORE forever.

We tend to do things like that. I did the same with Yosemite. Then moved away from Cal for 20 odd years before I couldn't stand it anymore and moved back to be by the ocean. Been back to Yosemite now too. ;3

Where you live? I'm in La Pine right now. Heading for Bend in a little while before I cut across to Idaho on the way to Yellowstone.

That's a lovely lake!

And I never realized that I could take a panorama shot of it with my new camera yesterday and get the whole thing in one shot. Tried today on my way out but the sun was reflecting off it and I don't think it came out well. Have to look later.

Trust me, I live an hour from it. Oregon's nature is pretty meh compared to some of the other things you could be seeing.

I've been up in that area a couple of times in the winter and once in the summer. I've seen Crater Lake personally one time; most of our trips are to Diamond Lake instead and usually involve the bike path or snowmobiles.

is the Lake for swimming?

You CAN but there's only one way to reach the water. And that's down a steep 1.2 mile trail that goes to a dock where you can take a boat ride around the lake and even land and walk around on the big island called Wizard Island. Or swim if you wish. According to their FAQ's ( http://www.nps.gov/crla/faqs.htm ) the surface can get to 55 or 60 degrees during the summer. But there are no nice beaches or anything like that.

That water's so blue! You'd have thought that this pic was PSed or somepin. When my wife and I took a vacay to Niagara Falls, I was struck by how blue and clean-looking the water was going over the falls. Closer to home, if there were an Ohio Falls with the Ohio River, the look would be the polar opposite - all brown and muddy and gross-looking...

It was originally named Blue Lake by about three different explorers because of it's intense blue water. That's the real color.
