It's called a rogatywka. It came in both a fancy, stiff dress version, and a more basic soft, field version (which is the type the son has on).
Here's the dress version (which is still worn today by the Polish Army):

In english they're usually called the Polish 4 corner cap, as it has four corners on the crown, in the shape of a square, and is set slightly off center to the right and back, like so:
