Ch. 10 Assembly (or Escape from Bowhive Base part 4)
Dimitree popped his head out of the hole to find that Raider was crying harder than he ever had before in his life. (Including the one time Mama spanked him). Slamming his fist into the ground, Raider was shouting every form of profanity that he could think of. Dimitree would have slipped back into the hole but Zephyr wouldn’t let him do that.
“Shush! Be quiet Raider,” Zephyr put her flower to the Riolu’s mouth, “do you want the entire base to know we are here.”
Raider tried to clam up, but he just couldn’t stop that easily. How much tears could his body contain? “I’m sorry Zephyr,” Raider snorted, “I just…”
“I get that it’s hard. Believe me,” Zephyr sighed, “but your Mama’s one tough Zoroark! She took on tougher Pokémon when she was a-”
“Um, little help here please,” Bambi stated, “I can’t quite get up and out of this hole on my own.”
Dimitree tried to help her along with Floette, but they didn’t have the right grip to help the Deerling. He shouted to his brother, “hey, help us out you crybaby!”
“Dimitree,” Zephyr scolded at the kit, “You shouldn’t talk to your brother like that!”
“No, he’s right. I am being a crybaby right now and I need to stop,” the Riolu wiped his face dry, “Just give me a second…”
“It’s still no way to talk to your brother,” Zephyr huffed.
“Clearly you don’t have any brothers,” Raider laughed lightly as he moved over to help pull Bambi from the hole. He was about to grab onto her when a thought hit him.
“What are you waiting for? Pull her out,” Dimitree whined at his sibling.
“Hold on,” Raider raised a paw at Dimitree before addressing the stuck Pokémon, “Bambi was it?”
“Yes?”
“Pobon didn’t start acting weird until after he tried looking into your mind,” Raider narrowed his eyes, seeing the others notably backed away from them both, “Any idea as to why that is?”
“Is that all,” Bambi tilted her head, “Well, I can honestly say: no. I don’t.”
“Liar,” Raider stated flatly, “You know something…”
“I don’t know anything about what happened to your friend.”
“While I wouldn’t exactly call that Psycho Swine a friend,” Raider tilted his head, “I seriously doubt that you have absolutely no idea what’s going on with him.”
“Look, all I remember is that I went on an assignment in Pilot Forest with my mentor.”
“Your mentor?”
“Yes, my mentor. And everything was going fine until I blacked out and woke up to this whole crazy mess. I have no idea why the zombie thing is happening,” Bambi looked down, “however, I do know what they’re chanting… what it means.”
“Yeah right.”
“You don’t believe me…”
“No, I don’t.”
“Then look at my Aura,” Bambi dared the Riolu, “Does it feel like I’m lying?”
Raider closed his eyes, “No, it doesn’t feel like it.”
“Then by all means get me out of this hole already and I’ll tell you,” Bambi huffed, “Just because I’m part Grass-type doesn’t mean I particularly enjoy being buried in the dirt.”
Raider would have inquired further, but saw no point in it. The Riolu moved behind the Deerling to try and pull her up by her armpits.
“Smart pup, now be careful.”
It took a few tries, but he managed to get her up enough for her to pull herself the rest of the way out. Bambi composed herself before she took a look around.
“Thank you. Now…where are we?”
“Hold on,” Raider shook his head, “what is veeva la rainy-”
“Vive la Reine, Vive Reine Candace,” Bambi rolled her shoulders, “it translates as: Long live the queen. Long live Queen Candace.”
“And just who is Queen Candace?”
“Don’t know,” Bambi shrugged, “but chances are that’s who’s really behind all this. Not me.”
“I’ve certainly never heard of a Queen Candace,” Zephyr pitched in, “come to think of it, I don’t know that many queens to start with.”
“So where are we,” Bambi repeated.
“Inside the Kecleon Brother’s Shop,” Raider answered as he reached out for an Apple, “We can stock up on supplies before we head out for-”
“I wouldn’t do that,” Bambi warned, “You do not want to steal from the Kecleon Brothers.”
“And just why not,” Raider asked, angrily glaring at the Deerling.
“Yeah, why not,” Dimitree rolled his eyes at her too, “it’s not like they’ll notice now that they’re… oh, I don’t know… zombies!”
“You two just don’t get it. Kecleon Shopkeepers have a magical connection to their shops,” Bambi explained, “If something is taken from the shop’s zone without being traded directly by their hands, then they’ll be teleported right to where the thief is.”
“And just why should we believe you,” Raider snapped.
“How about because she’s totally telling the truth,” Zephyr zipped between the two of them, “be it in a Dungeon or a Base, Kecleon never let any Pokémon steal their merchandise.”
“I should of figured as much,” Raider looked over to Bambi, “Although, I’ve been coming to their shop for a while now and I didn’t even know that.”
“I wouldn’t have known myself if I hadn’t tried it once on a dare,” Bambi smiled awkwardly, “it didn’t end so well.”
“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. We can’t just go back out there,” Zephyr interjected, “I mean we could, but then we’d be zombie chow. And I don’t want that to happen. No Sir. They might accidentally bite something off, or worse swallow me whole. How come you didn’t Dig us all the way out of here to begin with Raider?”
“Because I figured that we needed supplies and besides,” Raider admitted, “I don’t know where ‘out’ is while underground.”
“Don’t know…,” Bambi stated, “How could you not know?”
“I’ve never been outside Bowhive Base before.”
“So what,” Bambi snapped, “you couldn’t figure out which direction out was by digging towards the window?”
“I just wasn’t thinking about which direction to Dig, okay,” Raider snapped back.
Dimitree looked up to his brother, “It’s because of that bond with Steel, right?”
“It has to be…,” Raider rubbed the back of his head, “I’m sorry Dimi.”
“Who’s Steel,” Bambi turned to the Riolu.
“None of your business!”
“Look, I get why you don’t like me, however,” Bambi breathed in a sigh, “we’re going have to trust each other right now. I’ve told you everything that I know, so I think that it’s only fair that you do the same.”
Raider paused to think about what she was saying. No, he didn’t like her. He couldn’t. He barely even knew her. Still, she didn’t exactly do anything wrong. Not yet anyway. Raider breathed in, “Long story short: Steel is like my other half. Whether anyone likes it or not, we’re spiritually connected, so-”
“So you are naturally drawn to him and feel anxious when you’re further away from him,” Bambi’s eyes turned violet for a moment, “and more so the two of you have a simi-symbiotic relationship with each other. He can’t survive without draining your energy.”
“How did you…,” Raider was at a loss for words,
“I… don’t know,” Bambi blinked her eyes back to their usual black. she seemed confused, “All the sudden, I just… knew.”
“Ooh-ooh-ooh! I know! I know,” Zephyr raised her hand as if she were in a classroom, “I’ve seen this before. It’s psychic blowback. Pobon must have accidentally shared some of his thoughts with you when his head went all ka-blewy!”
“Is that so,” Bambi shivered, “it’s kind of creepy.”
“You should be fine,” Zephyr assured her, “Pobon told me once that the effects of psychic blowback only last a day at most.”
“I don’t know,” Raider looked over to the selves, “If you weren’t here, then we would have been caught the moment we tried to leave with our stolen inventory. But now we know that we’re gonna have do things a bit differently.”
“Which is?”
“Zephyr,” Raider turned to the fairy, “didn’t Liteyeer buy a whole bunch of Oran Berries? Assuming that they were left behind, can we use those as food?”
“Yeah, they wouldn’t be enough to fill our bellies by very much, but we can take them out of the store.”
“Good. Also, while we can’t take anything from here… I know for a fact that we can still use some of them without alerting the zombie Kecleon,” Raider pointed at the shelf containing the TMs, “So any moves you guys want to learn?”
“You really are a smart pup,” Bambi smiled at the Riolu.
“Oh is he ever,” Zephyr rolled her eyes, “Did you know that this kid said his first full sentence when he was less than a day old? Sure, it was only three words, but it was like so totally weird. Pobon was obsessing about it all month.”
“Why did we bring her along with us,” Dimitree whined as he looked over the TMs selection, “Is there a Poison-Type move in there somewhere?”
“None that I think you can learn. Hey, how about this one,” Raider selected one off the shelf and smacked it on his brother’s head. Dimitree’s eyes went wide for a second as he learned how to turn his voice into a vicious weapon of it’s own, similar to his mother's Roar.
“What just happened,” Dimitree blinked.
“You just learned Snarl,” Raider smiled, “Wont that be a shocker for the next time you get bullied at school.”
“Awesome,” the Zorua grinned widely, “What else can I learn?”
“I think that you could use Substitute like me, Dimi,” Raider looked over the many disks, “but I don’t see it… they must have sold it.”
“Or it’s in their safe,” Bambi suggested, “It’s what most Shopkeepers would do to create supply and de-”
Raider interjected the Deerling, “You know about the Kecleon’s safe?”
“Doesn’t everyone? Seems like common knowledge.”
“I don’t,” Dimitree piped in.
“Yeah, but I meant…,” Raider shrugged looking around the room, “do you know where it is?”
“Well, each shop is different,” Bambi admitted, “but I think that I might be able to find it…But do we really need Substitute?”
“Actually,” Raider hopped down from the chest he was using as a ladder, “there was something else I was thinking about getting.”
“Oh no,” Zephyr shook her head, “You are not bringing that cursed blade with us.”
“You’re not my mother Zephyr,” Raider snapped at the Floette.
“No, but Mellon would have told you the same thing.”
“No, she wouldn’t,” Dimitree stated, but bit his lip. He wasn’t supposed to tell.
The pair of arguing Pokémon turned to Dimitree, “…What?”
“Mama told me a story today while you were still asleep. I don’t really remember all of it,” Dimitree kind of shuffled his feet, before standing straight and proud, “I know that she wants Raider to have Steel. She even said that they must be destined for each other.”
“You’re serious? I mean, you’re not making this up or anything, right,” Zephyr looked Dimitree right in the eyes. Dimi turned away, he wasn’t so sure himself.
“Well, I kind of fell asleep in the middle of the story,” Dimitree looked Zephyr right in the eye, “But she kept talking about how Raider and Steel were just like the Pokémon in the story.”
“She did…,” Raider looked his brother in the eyes as well. He knew when his brother was lying, but this wasn’t one of those times. Mellon believed in him? That was hard to take in, especially considering that less than an hour ago, she was having trouble letting him go to school, let alone saving anybody.
“Please don’t do it Raider,” Zephyr put a hand to Raider’s own, “if that Honedge implants anymore of it’s old memories into you then-”
“Honedge can’t implant memories,” Bambi stated, “I mean, they can possess some unsuspecting beings for short periods of time, but that’s more of imposing their will into others.”
“In case you’ve forgotten, a ton of impossible things have been happening lately,” Zephyr zipped her way into Bambi’s face, “I wouldn’t doubt it if that blade was the reason everybody was turning into zombies to start with.”
Raider was about to make a retort when Bambi stepped in again.
“Well, the only way out of here safely is to Dig our way out,” Bambi explained, “but, considering that Raider here’s sense of direction is thrown off due to his connection with that Honedge, then wouldn’t it be more beneficial for us to find it and take it with us?”
“You…,” Zephyr was finally speechless.
“That settles it then,” Raider motioned for everyone to follow him, “First we’ll stock up on whatever moves you think we’ll need, then we’ll look for that safe so that we can all get out of here.”
“There’s only one problem with that plan,” Bambi turned back to the Riolu, “how do you plan on opening it to get to Steel?”
“I don’t know, but…,” Raider couldn’t exactly explain it, he felt that something was different this time, “I think that… I just have to trust we’ll find a way.”
“Trust that…,” Bambi almost fell over, “that’s not a plan at all!”
“I’d think you’d find that while I excel at utilizing resources,” Raider kind of blushed at this, “I very rarely actually have a ‘plan’, per-say.”
Meanwhile deep on the lowest floor of the Pilot Forest Mystery Dungeon. A relatively small group of long past zombified Pokémon were already gathered. Unlike the newly turned ones in Bowhive Base, these ones were much more docile. These male slaves (as females would be entirely worthless) wanted nothing more than to just be in the presence of their glorious queen and the pheromonic pollen she commanded. Of course, that would easily change in an instant if their mighty queen so wished for it with her own silent commands.
Queen Candace was perched upon the head of her prized Venusaur servant as a makeshift throne in all of her glory. She could hardly believe how much her kingdom has grown now. Her many zombified subjects now only lived to serve her every whim, with her special kind of motivation of course. She only allowed a few of them to have just enough intelligence to perform simple jobs for her. In fact one of her servants, a Mightyena, was running to tell his mistress some good news.
“Vive la Reine,” the Mightyena bowed the moment he reached the middle of the room.
“We take it that Team Daybreak took Our bait. Our dear conduit and Our grub was taken inside,” Queen Candace took a drag from her pipe, watching as her servant did his best to acknowledge her words as true. This was especially hard as he couldn’t speak outside of praising his queen. It amused her how pathetic she could make her underlings, “Good… then by morning time, We shall remove Ourselves from this wretched Dungeon and have a decent fortress from which to rule from.”
“Vive la Reine! Vive la Reine!,” her slaves rejoiced, “Vive Reine Candace!”
