Seems like the only consistently competent guards are Shining Armor and Flash Sentry. Why? They're the only named Guards, and the former is Twilight's big brother, so....
But yeah, the Royal Guard are pretty useless overall. Then there's fanfiction, where they're INFINITELY more useful.
