So, just yesterday, on my mother's birthday, there was a deer and two babies in our backyard.
We tried tossing out some carrots for the (presumable) mother, but she left without touching anything. When she left, though, she had left one of her children behind, who was in the middle of a circular garden we have.
Not wanting to miss the opportunity, I got down there and took a few photos (it did not occur to me at the time what that could lead to, I was too "in the moment"), and my mother soon followed suit.
And then she started petting it, as we see here. (I pet it a few times myself; so soft)
It was really cute, but I reckon it was probably none too comfortable with two humans standing around it. We may not have meant it harm, but it could not have known that!
After a short bit, we left it alone. It then proceeded to get up and go look for its family. The mother and her other baby showed up a little later, but they could not find the lost deer.
We can only hope the lost baby got back safely, but it is hard to tell when the people driving up and down the local streets think this is Nascar.

Taking the baby in could have been a very bad idea depending on the laws in your area. I think it was in Wyoming I could be wrong. It was a few years back that some guy took in a fawn that the mother was hit by a car. Fish and game raided his ranch, the agents had fun shooting the fawn in his barn, and he was hit with a very large fine of tens of thousands of dollars.
