Terrible insecurities. Her self confidence turns to indecision because she's not sure if someone would accept her as she is. She tends to fall deeply in love, but there's always an undercurrent of self loathing that causes her to hold back and restrain her emotions for fear of overwhelming others.
She was made fun of as a child for both her weight, as kids tend to do to one another once they find a weakness, as well as the fact that she's a skunk, which always comes with negative stereotypes associate ... As a result there were a lot of years where she felt trapped as an outcast, especially once puberty set in. She hides her low self esteem behind a wall of positivity and romanticism.
That's the first bit of it that I can think of... Part of my problem is that I am trying to avoid making her TOO transparently my personal character, because there are a lot of places where my life and hers somehow overlap.

You put some thought into it, I can see that much. I never would have considered the effect being a skunk would have on her social life, but it makes sense. Kinda like what being an African-American in our world would do. It's better than it used to be, but it'll never really go away. I imagine that's the same thing with skunks in your world.
