Getting Up - Short Story - Maintenance
Putting her arms around Jeremiah, he quickly awoke. Still grogy, he struggled to get out of from under the covers. Pulling against Lucy, he pulled her right arm out from its base. Lucy expected that to happen, her limbs were designed to automatically detach if they were put under too much stress to prevent injury. Jeremiah was now fully awoken and set Lucy's detached right arm on the floor next to the bed and climbed back in with her to snuggle for a bit.
A short time later, Jeremiah gave Lucy one last smooch before getting up and heading off to the bathroom. Lucy sat up and picked her right arm off the floor and reattached it to her stump. The touchscreen powered up as it tried to sync with her other prostetics. Lucy felt herself get partial control of the limb, but she could tell even without the beeping and error messages on the screen that something was wrong. She couldn't move her elbow or her thumb and she didn't have feedback from two of her fingers. Looking at the screen only confirmed what she already knew.
Getting up and going back to her prostetics cabinet, Lucy took out a cotton swab and sat back down on the bed. Taking off her right arm, she gripped it between her legs with the hand pointed down. Taking the cotton swab, she carefully cleaned the piece of lint that had gotten stuck on the spring loaded pins that made up the electrical connectors on the prostetic. When she was finished with that, she lifted her stump to where she could see the contacts on the base, but they were all clean.
Snapping the arm back into the base, Lucy once again made sure the prostetic powered up and synchronized properly. Standing up and tossing on a long shirt from her dresser, Lucy left the bedroom towards the kitchen where she heard Jeremiah getting breakfast ready. Getting up for Lucy was a real workout and she was one hungry bunny.
