I was introduced to the Nafarious Captain Kaldarr the Tailess (And now armless, so I guess he's something of a Bionic Voxxan.) in my friend Bernard Doove's story "Briar Patch." Ever since his run in with the Stellar Foxtaurs his Privateering ventures have never been quite the same. His ship made up of mostly salvaged and unreliable components, is often cantankerous and full of surprises. There are often many incompatibilites between the software and hardware in the ship's systems.
Oh... The song by the way is "Houses in motion" by the Talking Heads.

( It's Slinky! It's Slinky! It's more than a wonderful toy... )
As such I have more than a little empathy for these folks.
BTW, have you ANY idea how boring it is to be a navigator (my character) assigned to a star base??
Having played an old version of the game myself (particularly during ship combat), I can sympathize.
But I'd bet they'd find you plenty of work reviewing charts, coordinating deployments, refining standard routes, etc. Not your primary training, true, but not really outside it either.
1. Keeping the base maps updated
2. Making sure any and all ships coming through had their nav. stuff up to date.
3. Checking for undue drift of the base itself.
BTW, what deployments???
Also you may want to change "signafy" to "signify" in panel #4 :)
Cool Puppies! Strange and getting stranger.
Waugh! Waugh! Waugh! Waugh! Waugh!-Waugh Waugh!

He's been dead for almost 500 years Cap'n.
You know what I mean. Shut off that dreadful music!
If I do that it seals the airlocks and flushes out all relief stations, Sir.
Drat.
but while I don't see them getting away from fleet that easy, I can see them being made to use their skills in a useful manner -- and I can see someone planting thinks like that music box to remind them of just how far they've fallen ...
