This little guy came home with me, because a Petco that I have been helping is having issues with it's temperatures and he has been quite stressed. I set up a habitat for him last night and made it as it should be so he'll be good to go. He should be a bright red but he's not a happy froggy right now.
They don't have the ability to hop, only crawl.

I imagine some PetSmarts do like Home Depot does their employees. I work in a Sherwin-Williams paint store, so I know that Home Depot will often take employees from one area and put them into another, for example hardware to paint, where they're expected to actually know what to do or at least act like they do to the customer. I believe it's to save money to avoid hiring new people. Take from one that they feel wouldn't be affected by the loss of an employee and stick them where they need another. So, this could be the case for the PetSmarts you've visited. I honestly wouldn't be surprised, it all depends on the manager or more likely the district manager. Given that one deals with hardware and the other deals with live animals, though, I would expect them to do some research on the animals that they'd be caring for. I know I sure as hell would.
I have worked with Petco for three years and I will not defend them as a company, same with petsmart.
Because I've been in some terrible Petcos and Petsmarts over the years and have reported a fair share of them.
They are large market companies that claim that animals come first but where you run into issues is the district managers as well as the store managers and the employees.
You run into those rare RARE stores that care for the animals and do what they can no matter reptile/small animals/fish yada yada to keep them healthy. I've worked at some GREAT Petcos that listened to what I had to say when it came to animal care and also did their research on the different animals so they understood what they were getting themselves into. I've seen Petsmarts do the same thing. And then I've worked at a few where I just had to step in and do it myself because I knew that they weren't going to listen to me even if I screamed at them till I was blue in the face. >< With any company, small chain or large chain, it depends on who you've hired and their dedication. ^^

Well, some people really just don't care. They're not there for the animals or because they care about the animals. They're just in it because it's a job. It's sad, but that's the way the world works, at least now. And there are others who just don't do their research, so just assume things and claim as though it's knowledge. I'm sure every store has people who truly care and who do their homework on the animals they're tasked with looking over, but every store has those on the opposite end of the spectrum. I wouldn't know, though, since the PetSmart in my town is a tiny one and only has fish, then gets dogs from the shelter every Saturday to adopt.
