2 weeks, but it didn't really take that long. I had suddenly worked on a few other things, did many test renders, didn't feel well for a bit...
And lost net for a short while. Not to mention FA dying yet again as I was about to submit the image.
You can see the collage of WIP images for this submission here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15972773/
The collage will be updated with the most recent WIP images, or will be shortly if it isn't already. I caution you, the image is big. It is a collage of many images.
Anyway, this is a "bottle world", an idea I've had for quite some time now. Maybe a year or two. I hardly get to show my ideas... It can either be a full world or "real time piece" of the world.
The idea is that it's a small ecosystem in a bottle. Not really a new idea, you can make one yourself. But unlike those, this has a sky, its own weather, and it's hard to see but that's an ocean on the bottom.
Well, a tree on an island on an ocean. Originally, this was supposed to be during the day or afternoon. Test renders will show that I kinda moved to a night setting.
This was also originally supposed to have rain and the sky (bottle sky) was supposed to somewhat light gray, as the sky would look when raining in the afternoon.
I did make rain (5k droplets as I thought 100k droplets would lag), but it was quite hard to see. So I figured I'd just remove it. Lightning was an idea I wanted to add during testing.
For my first time modeling lightning (yes, that's a model), I don't think it came out so bad. I think there should be a more pronounced effect, but it looks alright.
I think. Plasma balls look about the same, yes? But maybe there was an effect the sparks had on the edge of the glass.
I didn't make the background. I'm not even sure it fits. I should have went with my original idea, and I will make another version of this during the day time.
The background room comes from here: http://www.simoncornwell.com/urbex/.....r/admin/19.jpg
Which comes from this website: http://www.simoncornwell.com/urbex/.....dmin/index.htm
The other background comes from here: http://wallpaperscraft.com/image/14...../1600x1200.jpg
I can't show the website it comes from because every time I go there it changes.
Both images are slightly edited to make them darker and fit with the theme.
I made the table, which is just a simple box, but not the texture. It's the same wood texture I used when making that bass guitar, which you can see in my gallery.
Or just here, since I get a whopping 20 views on things that took me weeks to make: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15760970/
I should move my name. It covers up the slight extra light that the lightning provides. But it felt right to have it there at that size and at that level of visibility.
The tree was made in SpeedTree modeler. I can model my own tree, and from the last indie game project I worked on, I made a set (unfinished) of modular (HARD) trees with hundreds of combinations.
But I wanted something that looked more like a bonsai tree. I don't have that. Or I kinda do, but not like this. I can still model my own, but didn't think I could do the leaves properly.
You can't see it because it's hidden by the darkness, but when I exported the tree, it has holes in the trunk. I have no idea why. It looks really bad.
Next time I'll just make my own. I wanted more detail anyway.
I made the bottle holder much too ornate. When I make the day time version, I'll remake it into something more simple. The holder was the first thing I made.
Then again, this is a world in a bottle. Maybe you should have something rather ornate like that holding something grand like this.
Sorry for the noise. You can see a lot more of that in the test renders. Here, I used 200 samples. Didn't take as long as I thought it would, but still you can see slight noise.
What does samples mean? Well, all of my WIP images used about 35 samples. I think I used 100 for one of them (the really grainy and foggy one).
The cap has jewels embedded in them. It was to show that the "world was active", and / or to lock the world in the bottle (magic?), as well as provide light to the world.
But I took it away. The light at least. I just wanted to show how grand something like this would be. Not like this is being put inside of a Gatorade bottle...
I really hope you all like it. If not... well, it was fun making it. And as per the wishes of a friend, I may look into trying to get this onto Second Life. I'll have to tone down some things.
Namely the tree and the holder. They have a lot of polygons. At least I'll have to if I give them physics. But I have to learn more scripting and such.
As usual, please don't steal, edit, copy, etc.
Want something, just ask. I may be willing to share this model / scene.

yes, there's no telling how many views you'll get on what. absolutely no relation to how much work you put into it.
one tendency, you get more views with characters in the mid to foreground, but even that is no guarantee.
and the number of views to the number of favorites. when a piece or the search keys mention or suggest something people are familiar with you get more of both.
buuuuut, i have some pieces that get more favs and fewer views at the same time, and also the opposite.
i don't think i've gotten more then a hundred views on anything of mine yet, seldom more then 50.
and only once or twice have i ever gotten more then 5 or 6 favs. these mostly from the same loyal friends, whom i love and appreciate for doing so.
building up a library of interesting things to append, and using them helps a lot making a scene interesting to people.
other, often better angles and views, or further along views of something i've already shown as a work in progress, seem to get the least views of all.
not saying anyone else would have the same experience i have, just that this is what i've discovered.
so when i do post a more developed scene, or a different angle, i've found it helps for it to not be the next one i post after an eariler version of it, even if the angle makes it almost unrecognizable as containing much of the same model work.
my inspiration and motivation comes completely irregular too. sometimes i'll create two or three things in the same week, and sometimes i'll more then a week, sometimes several, before i've made something else complete enough looking to post.
someone once tried to tell me there were only two reasons to make art. one was for the money and the other for the ego. but there is a third reason, and that is the one that is mine, and that is to attempt to broaden other people's worlds, by attempting to illustrate something they might not have otherwise thought of.

Money and ego? Pfft, I totally agree with you. The interaction of worlds. The expression of self. The seeking of soul. That's what art is, or should be. Sure, money can be had, but it's not the same.
Funnily enough, the pics I get the most views on are my most mundane images. One I made as a dumb joke is my most popular submission, heh. Ones that took me weeks, months... they barely get seen at all.
I've also drawn a few times, images with characters, but those are in the same boat. I post it up, I barely get 30 to 50 views after nearly a year. Friend posts the same image, they get hundreds in a couple days.
That's something I noticed though. About the only time I get decent views is when I make something for someone, and they post it for themselves and link back to it.
Honestly, I would like more views and favs and comments, but I think more I just want to continue doing what I like and showing people the ideas I had. I wish to bring my imagination to fruition.
I have a few more ideas about stuff that I'd like to make and show people. I think they'll be cool. I just gotta find the balance between personal work and trying to start a business or something, heh.
