Yellow Wallpaper

This is one of my first sculptures coming out of my classrooms this semester. The main goal of our first (mixed media) sculpture was to repurpose a chair or a tool into a piece of art...and thanks to my fathering hoarding a few items, found a chair that suited my needs. Originally, the entire thing was going to be bound in cut strips of white sheets....and then the professor made the suggestion of a straight jacket theme. The spark struck and I ran with the concept. A white shirt, four tubes of heavy duty glue, stuffing and a coat of white paint (Need to buy the paint to finish it out), and this monstrous creation was born. I'm calling it "Yellow Wallpaper" because a friend suggested a story that this reminded her of where a woman, who was easily excitable, was locked in the attic of her home. She had a comfortable room...but began to see a woman behind the yellow wallpaper. Soon, she got excited and obsessed, leading her to rip all the wallpaper down in a fit of paranoia and descending into insanity because of it. So, I decided to make it seem like an unknown figure, bound and writhing in pain and insanity, either appearing as if it is emerging from the chair...or being absorbed into the chair to show that insanity is robbing the person of their being.
