Note the Albert-likeness of the ‘smudgy’ banjo-lines. I love Walt Kelly’s shading, but always felt his hatching tended to look less like the characters were shaded and more like they were sooty. Thusly, when the gator gets sooty, he gets suspiciously similar markings.
