Grandmama, another character from Southern Gothic hell. Grandmama is Big Daddy Scractch’s grandmother, making her Kitty Scratch’s great-great-grandmother. (A recurring theme in any appearance of the Scratch family is that the devil has a grandmother and granddaughter but no mother or daughter and no one, not even the devil himself, knows why. I read this in some Russian folktale once and I liked the sound of it; it seemed appropriately bizarre.) She is, at the time of the events of this story, dead. Devils can die, apparently. She was at one point the crazy old woman locked in the attic a la every V.C. Andrews book ever, but she eventually disappeared mysteriously and, since her ghost appears now and again to plague the residents of the devil’s manor house Temptation, it’s assumed she met a violent end but no one is fessing up. I imagine that Kitty will eventually find her body in a crawlspace somewhere.
