Dave: Vanth pretty much lives in every kid’s dream come true- her room is awesome, and filled with toys. Good ones too, no Mr. Chitters crap here… But I think it’s true that frustration bites, no matter what you might have on the shelf. Also, I am jealous of her skylight.
Liz: Vanth may be in that unique spot where her parents will buy her anything to show their love. It isn’t received in vain, she does appreciate it and loves them, but has more grown up desires on her mind.

I see a disconnect between parents and child. They aren't listening to each other. At a minimum, her parents aren't listening to Vanth, or at least aren't understanding (or are just dismissing which is worse) what she's saying.
And Liz, if all you do is buy them things, there's a distinct lack of love somewhere.

In a sense, she's being shown as differently abled compared to her fellow students and even her parents. Could be that's part of why flying means so much to her - She gets something back for all her trouble. Not being able to write or type, but having the ability to fly? That could help even the scales.
I don't get the feeling they don't love her, they just don't really understand. They've apparently sent her to seek help, but they might be afraid to let her seek that dream. To them, flying unaided by anything but your own arms isn't exactly rational. To her, it's just one more thing she SHOULD be able to do but can't. They're trying to buy her distractions from her problems and there comes a time in a child's life where you realize that something new and shiny doesn't make pain stop.
Darn you, stop making me feel things.
