It's time to say it: The whole reason I went out to Further Confusion in 2014 was this sketch. Not so much the specifics of what it depicts as that it's of MLP:FIM ponies -- and drawn by Baron Engel.
Not long after becoming a fan of the show, Baron started drawing images from a dreamscape of his that had him visiting Equestria. When I began a sketchbook of ponies, I needed something from Baron in it -- but he wasn't taking commissions at that time.
You don't get far trying to demand things of creative people, so I bided my time. Baron and I don't attend the same cons usually, so I went around getting commissions on the cover and other pages. When one page was left blank, I held onto it and began making plans.
In the middle of winter, I drove four days cross-country to attend Further Confusion because Baron was expecting to be there. He was, and he did. It wasn't the only commission I arranged with him during the con, but it was the one that got me out there.
As to this image, I'll just add a silly revision of an old (and quickly discontinued) ad the U.S. Army once used:
I am a pony.
A cavalry of one.
Even though I serve Princess Celestia,
I am my own force.
With the latest magic,
Training, and support,
Who I am has become better than who I was.
And let me tell you,
The might of the Equestrian Army doesn't lie in numbers.
It lies in ponies like me.
I am a cavalry of one, and you can see my strength.
Drawn for me by

Very well done, as Baron's work always is -- thpugh given y own interests I always wondered what an army of late Medieval/early Renaissance ponies would look like. I figured on Earth ponies as the equivalent of men at arms or pikemen, pegasi as skirmishers and scouts (though with their ability to control weather...), and unicorns as artillery that can get around on its own and think.
I've pondered the subject on my own and have imagined such things as:
* A pegasus pulling a sky-chariot with an earthy pony spotter and a unicorn "cannon."
* Unicorn "engineers" tearing down or building up fortifications and barriers.
* Earthy pony troops trained in "earthquake" tactics to disrupt the enemy.
* Unicorn "snipers."
