Clay is a character from a global-tier superhero campaign I'm playing in right now.
Mable Casias was a mechanics and Materials engineer, working in the industrial ceramics industry. She took an adaptation of modern 3d printer technology and modified it to use ceramics. Namely carbides, on account of of how they can take two substances of low melting points and slowly ease them out over a period of time. The original design was not perfect: Its slow speed and relative cost of materials made it less than effective for mass industrial use. When her idea was rejected, Mable went a little crazy.
She was eventually defeated by the heroes of Prominence, South Carolina. During her time in Prominence Memorial she became disappointed with the lackluster spread of her replicators through the world and she started considering a new end towards post-scarcity: nanofabrication. In my head she was inspired to this after talking to some other eccentric genius who had been locked away and learned a huge amount of it from him and any/all literature and outside research she could access from the hospital.
Through one means or another she escaped (probably through a deal with some other person who could supply her with funding and supplies) and was able to create self replicating nanobots that could take on architecture impossible with other forms of matter and could convert matter into other matter.
She conducted an experiment in the off-hours to have the bots turn a brick into a nutrient rich porridge (part of her plan to try and end world hunger or something). It apparently succeeded and she tried some to make sure it was safe for human consumption. Turns out the porridge was largely nanites which invaded her system and started converting her into more of them (her employer may have also tried it and died in the process).
She was fortunate enough to have access to their programming and was able to save herself, at least for the time being. She now wears a computer console on her face that she uses to continually monitor the nanite activity as well as a host of other things. She joined up with the coalition to gain access to their body of scientists to understand what went wrong with her nanites and either fix her problem or create a new set of nanites that do not have this particular defect.
