I haven't played any of those games since high school (excepting a quick return into Pokemon). Megaman, Sonic, and Castlevania couldn't survive the transition from 2D to 3D. Metroid did okay (from what I've heard) but also didn't survive the jump. RE4 was pretty cool and then they kept making it again except worse.
Really the only one that has staying power is Pokemon, but that's if you're into really high-level competitive play. I tried Pokemon White but it just wasn't for me. Granted I was sorta tired with Pokemon after Gold and Silver.
Can't really speak on Final Fantasy. JRPGs aren't exactly my cup of tea.
