Introducing the Carrier.
The second largest ship in the military's fleet. The design is actually a repurposed mining vessel from an older era, long ago converted for military use. The prevalence of deep space mining in the past means that many modern Carriers are retrofitted relics, upgraded and made suitable for warfare.
Carriers are, by tradition, the fighter launch craft of the military fleet. However, they are also able to carry large amounts of equipment and spare materials in place of their fighter craft component. Used in this fashion, a Carrier makes for a very effective repair vessel, which comes in handy when ships are unable to reach a traditional space dock. Carriers possess an open midsection, which allows smaller ships to safely dock with it for repair and refit. Larger ships must use airlock tube connections, trams, and other means for refit.
While larger and slower than most other vessels, Carriers are well armed. One hundred and eighty point defense guns, ten rail guns, and four missile pods protect the Carrier. Primary and secondary shields enhance this defensive armament. However, its main source of protection is the arsenal of drone and single-pilot fighter craft that it carries. A single Carrier can hold hundreds of fighter craft, forcing opposing ships to contend with an army of tiny attackers. When used to support ground operations, Carriers become an effective reinforcement and fire support tool, launching hundreds of drop-ships and bombers to wherever they are needed.
