25th January 1984, a few time after 4pm on the BA 172 of N'Djaména on the Tchad, Operation Manta, France and Tchad vs Libya.
Two french aeroplane are taxiing for the runway, the first is a Dassault Mirage F1 with an armement anti-aircraft, the second is a SEPECAT Jaguar A equiped for the ground attack. The two aeroplanes take their positions on the runway and a voice ringing on the radio:
F1: _ N'Djaména Airport of Fox Unité for take off.
N'D A: _ Fox, authorized take off - wind 10 knt in the axis.
The Mirage take off, this is to the turn of the Jaguar:
J1:_ Airport of Juliette Unité for take off
N'D A: _ Juliette, it's OK for take off, steady wind in the axis! Good flight!
And the two Adour Mk.2 had propulsed the Jaguar in the sky of the Tchad. The mission of those planes is to destruct every vehicule or warn of all infiltration of the Libyan troops near of the "Red Line".
The mission look calm when the radio of the J1 emit:
J1: _ Fox Unité of Juliette Unité! There are something of abnormal at two hours! Vehicules sand color... wrecks or convoy stopped?
You cover me, I make a pass!
F1: _ OK Juliette! I cover you! You can go. I see the convoy! There are something of not clear! Watch out, Comrade.
The F1 take some altitude and the Jaguar fall at 700km/h in direction of the suspect convoy.
At 500m, the Cpt. Croci, pilot of the Jaguar, saw some tanks, light vehicules and lorries. All of them are stopped, hide by dunes, they did the death.
The Jaguar climb with the full power of his engines and contact the COMELEF (Control of French elements) on the BA 172.
J1: _ Manta Autorité of Juliette Unité.
MA: _ Juliette, Juliette, Manta listening.
J1: _ Juliette, Vertical Torodum - Am "Visual" on unidentified column. Near of 50 vehicules of every type, stopped and without every human presence noticeable. Ask instructions -To you- ended.
MA: Juliette of Manta Autorité - Stand by!
MA: Juliette of Autorité, do a second pass VLA (Very Low Altitude) for reconnaissance and intimidation without opening fire.
J1: Received Autorité. Do you confirm without opening fire?
MA: Affirmative Juliette! Autorité confirm: without opening fire.
The Jaguar dived on the column when suddenly, a feeds fire rises from the column, the Jaguar is touched by a Ground-Air rocket from the full brunt and blew up in flight. The pilot of the F1 take some altitude and contact N'Djaména, he must come back on his base, he's not equiped for a straffing and an intervention from N'Djaména is impossible.
The pilot of the Jaguar was killed instantly, his name was Michel Croci, he were 39 years old and was the squadron leader of the Escadron de Chasse 4/11 Jura. It's the last french fighter pilot to be shoot down during the operations
