Drew this up the other day, trying to solidify the look that I want for my character. I'm trying to go for a cartoony look; avoiding a lot of fine details, but still able to be very emotionally expressive.
I like this one a lot, but for some reason I'm just not happy with the eyes. I spoke with my carpool buddy (professional artist) this morning, and he said that they were pretty good. I guess I'm my own worst critic.
Some day, maybe, I'd like to start up my own comic strip, and it seems to me that character eyes would be really important. I would need to make eyes in a way that I liked and that would allow me to show may different forms of expression.
I really like how Eric Schwartz (http://www.sabrina-online.com) does his character eyes, as well as Susan Rankin (http://www.doemain.com). But I don't want to just blatantly copy their work...
(sigh) keep practicing.
