Well the Colt 1872 which is known as the Peacemaker (or Single Action Army) was THE revolver of the Wild West. Slightly bigger caliber but was a slap shooter: the trigger only discharged the weapon unlike the Colt Lightning which was double action where the trigger cocked AND fired it. However, the man who killed Billy the Kid, a man famous for using the Lightning, used a Peacemaker.
I've had to do a lot of research into firearms from that time period (around 1874-1877). The Colt peacemaker is really starting to take hold, the lightening is still a year or two off. You can still readily find the Colt 1860 Army, the Remington new army, and a couple dozen other pistols and rifles.
