well, clearly Daniel and Nicky are Soul-Mates. Nicky is a sort of alternate personality of Secretin born of Secretin's self-oblivion. Daniel is gifted with an innate ability to connect to Nicky through his mind, thus being able to traverse between the material world and the otherworld. that hallway is the link between Daniel and Nicky. that is also why 10-C was able to draw power from Daniel but that power was under Daniel's control. and since Daniel isn't skilled in it's use, things can get pretty chaotic.
