Howling with a howler
The volume exerted by a wolf's howl when you are that close will make your ears ring.
Once, the white wolf began howling right next to me, and my first reaction was almost violent, it scared me that bad. (but it would have been a bad idea and a real short fight!)
Also, when they are on concrete, and howling, if you press your hand against the concrete you can feel their voices vibrate in it! O.O That's why their howls can be heard with human ears 3 miles away.

Mals can get almost as loud... At the range it's hard on the ears that's for sure.
When you have a mal that thinks he has to out howl or bark everyone at the kennel... You get a dog back that can just squeak... LOL They greet you and whimper at you because it hurts to much to do anything else.

You al have been so fortunate to be able to be so close to such noble/fearsome/wonderful furry creatures. There is a part of me that is a little jealous (I admit)
Forr someone who claims to be a hybrid furry with mixed blood; I am 1/2 Malamute and 1/2 Cougaress Ive always longed for the day when I could (IRL) be able to get just a *chance* to be next to, touch, snuggle(not gonna happen XP) my totem furry counterparts.
Congratulation on being able to be so close to them. My being a tad jealous is overwhelmed by happiness that I have for you in how comfortable and happy you are in all these pics *hugs*
Here's to hoping I can.. and will someday! *Mrowuffs quietly to herself*

Oh yeah, I use to sit on deck in the evening when we were fishing in SE Alaska back in the 70s just for a chance to hear them howl... Every now and then we would see them on the beach... Handling ones that were use to being handled was great but you always had to remember they were still wild at their heart and soul.
It is my opinion, that there was a great deal of sorrow when men fell in the Garden of Eden. Now, animals suffer a great deal, including predators, like wolves.
As people and wolves began to work together in times past, resulting in the domestic dog, I believe the wolf was a very special creature in the Garden of Eden. Closer to mankind than the other animals. That is why, in my opinion, we call our dogs, "Man's best friend". It seems like they understand us better than we understand ourselves. They are not dumb, they are unconditionally loving. These are traits I have seen in a precious few wolves, but that I have seen in wolves.
So, when they howl, to me, it is a mourning call, over the closeness they felt with mankind in the Garden, over blessings lost, and in the weariness of living in this world today.
