Wuff is lucky enough to have several of these cute little scamps living in the trees behind his den. In recent months, they've been busy putting on weight for the cold winter months to come. However, the Colorado weather has been pretty mild this year for the most part. So they just kept right on scrounging for good things to eat.
As a result, some of them have gotten quite chubby. And, apparently, some have tired of their acorns, pine cones, and other nutty goodies, and have decided to try out new taste treats!
Vargr's roomie caught this plump little fellow sitting on the corner of our planter out front of the house, enjoying his biscuit breakfast! Wonder where he pilfered that from? Wuffy's pretty sure he didn't bake it himself. But if he did, looks like he did a good job at it!
Can Vargr have one too? *nom nom nom*

*nodnods* Wuff believes these are called "fox squirrels", and they have nice reddish, orange, and brown colors instead of the more "monochrome" gray and white ones elsewhere. They also seem to be a bit larger (and not just chubbier *grins*).
Haven't seen any of the black or white ones near wuff. But there's a squirrel family living near wuffy's friend in San Jose, and that bunch usually has at least one or two pure black ones in the group every year.
Wuff finds those black ones VERY spiffy-looking!

"Alternative relationship", or perhaps a lunch date. *giggles*
Apparently the black ones are "melanistic" variations of the normal gray ones. Just the same as "black panthers" are regular panthers with melanistic black coats. The genes are supposed to be recessive. But wuff supposes, if the group of squirrels is inbred enough, they keep showing up.
That's likely why wuffy keeps seeing them at his friend's place in San Jose, year after year. Usually, the 'tree rats' don't tend to hang around that many years, with all the urban predators and hazards they gotta put up with. But they little 'tribe' in that area are probably breeding the dark ones relatively routinely.

*snickers* No matter how plump that little tree rat gets, it'd still barely be more than a mouthful, and wuff would have to do all that cleaning and such. A nice, well marbled roast from the local butchers would be far more to wuffy's taste, and Vargr wouldn't have to run near as fast to chase it.
On the other paw, a REALLY round squirrel would be all sorts of fun to watch waddling around the yard, and to fatten up even more. Would be a challenge to see just how round wuff could make one get. *giggles* So that MIGHT have been on wuff's mind. *winks*
