Team Velmass - The Trebuchet design
So my Dynamics class had a project where we had to divide into groups and build a trebuchet. Our team name was Velmass and I was the elected leader, we had a total of 4 people. The presentation and firing was today.
Weight: 1.806kg
Range: 4m (min) - 9m (max)
We where able to shoot 7m to 9m outside the demonstration. But in the presentation anxiety took over and the ball wasn't positioned properly. I take responsibility for that as I set up the ball as my team helped. I'm disappointed, I feel like I let my team and myself down. 1.5 months of hard work and this happens. 95% of the build was done by me. The wheels where made by a wood shop in town.
"Look, if you had, one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted, one moment
Would you capture it?
Or just let it slip?"
- Eminem - Lose Yourself
I had a working design 1 week before this presentation, but my team convinced me to change it just a few days before the presentation and of course they did help with the change. Ultimately we did get a slightly better range, but we where up past midnight despite having to get up early the morning. I was frustrated, as its not a good idea to do such a large change to a working design.
But ultimately we succeeded and gave our best, so my team members do deserve credit there. That last minute change by my team did pay off, despite all the hardships.
"He choked, he's so mad but he won't
Give up that easy, no, he won't have it he knows
His whole back's to these ropes, it don't matter he's dope..."
- Eminem - Lose Yourself
I need to be a better leader and step up. Allow freedom and creativity and engagement for the group members, but when there is uncertainty and time is being wasted I need to put my foot down and steer this group. The key is finding the optimum, and after this experience I think I did find that optimum.
Thank you fellow Velmass team members, its been an honor.
