Life's A Chibi: Ignored
"Its easy to ignore the old style of games and the people who play them than the ones you electronically play with and not see them at all."
"Out with the old, in with the new."
"Its easier to neglect the friends you play physically with than the ones you play with online anonymously."
"Its easier to interact with those who are online than those who are offline."
Many quotes came to mind. Chose this one since it was what I was feeling while writing it.
It took me a while to think of something to say while drawing this. The only thing that I was going on while doing this was whenever Soryane and I were busy doing commissions and Flo, Soryane's daughter, wanted to play games of Munckin or any other card game, we mostly say no because we were too busy. But when I was coloring this, my friends were talking about how awesome MMORPGs were and wanted me to join them. So I was going on two ideas, but one that mostly stood out for me was how people would play with other people online rather than play side by side.
I'm still not a big fan of WoW. Sorry. Played it for a few minutes and got bored. This was during my DnD ( dice playing ) years. Lost my entire first dnd group to WoW. Heard stories one of them flunked out of college due to that game. Friends and furs were suggesting I should play the new Animal Crossing game because its the "rave" of the fandom now. While working at a game store, I've seen people getting lost in their DSs playing online games with others, completely ignoring everything around them. It was like everyone was invisible to them while they were playing. Same goes with texting on phones and ipods.
... I'm a Elder Scrolls fan. Imagine how many face-palms I did when they announced the MMORPG of Elder Scrolls ...
Also, making another point:I'm going back into the board game faze. First game I wanted to buy ever since I came to Canada was "CLUE". I remember playing that game back in the 90's. I did find the game, but it has been "modernized" and the rules rendered. It is hard to find a good store that sells boardgames. More video game store are popping up. "Out with the old, in with the new."
Anyway, Im rambling. The point of this image is that those who have their faces glued to the computer screen in an MMO game forget that there are real people around you who wish to interact with you. Some people find it easier to communicate with others online than face to face.
Get away from your computer screen and go play a card game or board game with someone. You will be surprised how fun it could be.

B4 I could get my siblings to play board games on a rainy day, now the only one eager to play with me is my baby sister, but even she has been getting into online games, particularly Animal Jam. x.x I do likez me board games but just hard to get a group of people to play, and as it is now, it's embarrassing to mention playing them ^^'
That's me in a nutshell, especially around here. I can't go to a stream where people aren't talking about Pokemon, or Animal Crossing, or other Nintendo/DS games. I've never been into any of that stuff, and it seems like I'm the only one.
And board games are still fun. This new "I-Need-Everything-Now" Generation will never know the hours of fun had playing "Monopoly", "Clue", or my personal favorite "Sorry".

The thing with board and card games is that you can't just spontaneously start one especially if you're living alone just because you need people and a lot of time for a "Session", there is no problem with that when you play a video game and what's even more important is that Video games and "Physical" games are entirely different from each other so you can't just say get off the screen and play a board game and then expect it for everyone to be a funny experience. Me for my part I enjoy board games but really love video games, however I'm also more of an SP guy so that could be affecting my opinion.
BTW I don't get the hate against TES Online, people always wanted to play The Elder Scrolls with their friends together and it's not even affecting the main series because it's made by different studios.

I agree and love the image <3
much like socializing for me... online I am a social butterfly... but in real life I have severe social anxiety... I tremble, shake, and even sometimes cry cause I get so nervous. my throat drys up and I stumble on my words due to my stutter, and even worse when I am so nervous. My palms sweat and all around, I am dying to get out of the situation... even if I genuinely like the person I am interacting with.
My husband however is the complete opposite. He dont like communicating online, he has tried on various websites to connect, but never feels the same to him so he usually deactivates all his social networking accounts online. In person he interacts much better, very much at home and peace when he has someone to talk to face to face... makes it hard for either of us to relate to the other on that subject

I,m not a big board game fan (I have a few all-time faves, such as Catan and Battletech (I'm a HUGE 3rd ed nerd)), but I prefer video games that are coop in nature...
but when people are around? Screw vidja gaimz, I wanna talk and socialize! :D
Next time you're over or something, remind me to get you downtown to get you to Valet de Coeur. It ought to have pretty much anything you want, RPG/Board game related.
They're just a tad more expensive than average, but that's to be expected out of a specialized store like they are. :X

i love boardgames. the problem is i love strategic games that when i can get people to look away from their DS/PC/Xbox they baulk at the "complexity" of it, the length - how the like of Axis&Allies, Settlers of Catan, Cosmic Encounter, can be frighteningly long and complicated compared to say, WoW or Pokemon or the latest fighting game, I'll never know.
I know how tough it is. Myself and a friend have started up a local game club that focuses on all varieties of table-top games. From board to card to pen and paper. We've been having a slow time getting interest drummed up, but we've been trying. Being in Canada, you might check out https://www.meeplemart.com . They have pretty decent prices and I believe they have a deal on where shipping on any order anywhere in Canada is $10.
I know how you feel, I almost lost the oldest friend and best friend after I found second life, I had a broken leg and could only use my laptop, so I started to ignore the outside world and everyone in it, only wanting to play second life. I'm glad I quit my addiction before it was too late. I love to play card games now and board games, but it seems like no one else enjoys to sit down and play old games, even old games on older game systems before online play was made.
from one who doesn't really play online mmo's or anything... i know what you mean. but i've always sorta been a solo gamer :P
still think some of the best games i've played is cards against humanity at furry cons :P face to face with people is great because the expressions for how horribly wrong people's entries are make that game PRICELESS :P

Board games... Sweet. I'm in. I love board games. You can pull thing that you can't in video games. I love to play Monopoly, the classic style with paper money, because I always like to hide a little bit of my bigger bills under the board to fool my opponet. They think they have me beat, then I pull a 500 from under the board and turn things around. Sadly though, board type games are a dying art, but it's great for those who have a few good friends and not much money to spend on all the systems, games and gadgets.
Yeah, I can see the point here. The only problem is that you need physical friends nearby to play with, and...Yeah, I'm kinda lacking for some reason. Confuses the heck out of me; you'd THINK friends would come easier for nerds, but...
Still, eventually, I'd like to play a card game, Munchkin for one, the upcoming MLP: FiM card game for another. Though both cards and videogames share one thing: the ability to be a dick to your opponent/ally.

Ooh, damn this one hits close to home. And I think it hits harder because your chibis are just so powerfully, reality-defyingly KYOOOT. I do feel like I fall victim to this behavior on occasion, and it really is a terrible thing. Man, I can really feel the pain there of the snubbed real life gamer. This is quite well done and has a very powerful, meaningful message. I made sure to fave this one, because it's something that I should always remember.
This kinda reminds me of the fact that I own a Pac-Man board game that I actually like better than the game it's based on. Wakka-wakka! :V
One thing that pisses me off about the new AC is the fact that Resetti now gets on your ass if you so much as change the fucking date on your 3DS.
Not because I actually play the game, but because I have a buddy who does, and god forbid he miss that one event while he's at my damn house.

Bless your heart, you're a kindred spirit of mine. :3
I got bored of WoW. Play & DM D&D, and not only play board games and prefer them to electronic games, but I've begun writing down and drawing up proto types to games that I'll eventually create and hopefully have my own line of board game. :3
If I get a commission from you, would you like me to also send you a classic game of Clue? My friends and I go to Good Wills and 2nd hand shops to find old games.

I agree utterly with this. My hubby and I are doing our best to bring tabletop games into the family for our son. Though when the kid wants to play chess, I sit on the sidelines. Both the husband and him are outta of my range for such.
I would suggest Tabletop on YouTube for those looking to get into board games. It is hosted by Wil Wheaton and they have given us plenty of ideas for games to play.

I haven't played a physical board game in years. I don't enjoy RPGs, be they tabletop or other, and, despite having enough Star Trek CCG cards to outfit a whole group of players, I have no desire to play cards with anyone. That's offline. Online is no different, but at least it's easier to keep disagreeable people at a distance.
I don't want to play with other people. I have more fun playing games by myself than dealing with another player, offline or on-.

Looks like me. I like boardgames, cardgames, but never anyone around to play them. Barely having friends doesn't help. Each time my sister is back home we do play some games, but she usually has to work and leaves again fast so not many.
Had a lot of fun playing some on EF19 with other furries, but again that's more exception than rule.
Also an avid Video-gamer. Usually SP.
Can't understand the want for TES Online either. Isn't one of the greatest points of the TES series that the world is yours? Why share it?

This is hit me in the face with the quote and the picture; however what really has been hitting me in the face was the realization that my grandparents on both sides of my family were not going to be on this earth forever so every weekend I go and visit my mom's parents for three hours.
Ol' school board games are the best! Not that I'm saying that videogames are bad, on the contrary. MMOVG (massive multipayer online videogames) shatter the distance boundaries & gives great opportunity to play online with ppl ALL over the world and make connections / new relationships in its unique way. But every here & there it's always good to kick it retro. Boardgames always got ppl closer together, I still play some (Risk, Monopoly & my fav Cranium!)
I have more friends that live further away from me. I'm a little emotionally distant from people on campus, so not many friends there... My only means of communication with them most of the year is via phone or online.
Currently, it's especially through "League of Legends".
Don't get me wrong, I love the game. But, honestly... I'd really appreciate it if people actually took the initiative to come hang out in person. Heck, we could even meet up midway & do something! Most of my peers only live one or three hours away from me.
I do understand that money is an issue, too. But I've paid to take a bus to see people NUMEROUS times.
It hurts. ;A;
Blowing up turrets together can only be so much fun... & I'd honestly prefer other methods of connecting, too.

My biggest problem with MMO's is the monthly fees. Negative Cash Flow = BAD.
If I pay a flat fee for a game, then I own it, I can play it whenever I like and not feel 'rushed' to do anything. If I play an MMO, I get a drive to play it more frequently to get my 'money's worth' out of it that month. Ultimately, bad ju-ju, and one I stay well away from.

Me and my friends go to a hobby store that has tables where you can play board games at. In fact, they have a whole shelf full of card and board games guests can play before they can consider buying them. My friends and i would sometimes play CLUE, Talisman, or even Pathfinder. We even see some people play the Warhammer games. Not the video games, the actual miniatures games. I know media in entertainment is making a huge turn. It is sad to imagine those who are trying to stay to the forms their familiar with struggle to find those they can share it with. It's even more sad to think about what is going to happen to those games in the years to come.
Oh my boardgames.. and you *had* to mention clue. I have a 1950's copy of that, a 1958 copy of Finance, and piles of board games hiding in my room and closets.. I collect and play them gleefully.
We should totally do some board gaming if you come to Furnal Equinox, I love having some social gaming time to unwind and if its with friends, furs, or utter strangers its all good.
Gaia bless and roll the bones

Games are all fun and good, but one should never actually SHUN older games, let alone ignore your friends while playing them. Heck, I'm an avid PC gamer (.. more like addict to be truthful) but I am ALWAYS itching for a game of Red Dragon Inn, (Which is a tabletop card game where roleplaying and silly voices are encouraged) Just can't go wrong with the stuff people enjoy.
Hmmm...
I had a "sibling" ..... once... who played board games with me and other siblings. One thing that stood out with this particular sibling is that they cheated like crazy.
Not only did they cheat - but they cheated to such a degree that we would designate two or more to "watch" this sibling at all times to prevent them from cheating.
I never really understood why my sibling wanted to cheat so badly in every and any game but they for whatever narcissistic concept felt it must be done each and every game if possible. When they were caught cheating over and over again -- they never stopped cheating. They just complained, and loudly at that. After a while we as a group decided on punishments to cheating. This sibling would then throw a tantrum.
One nice thing about "online" games is that cheating doesn't really exist. The point of a game is to have fun. The irony is that when my siblings and I moved onto electronic functions and this same sibling played with us they would still throw tantrums. This sibling was also older than the younger siblings that played the games. Which kind of made it worse. I don't play games with this sibling anymore but they still request me to play with them. I never will understand that sibling.
The other thing to consider about online games is that a lot of "dice work" is removed or auto-calculated. It is far more cost effective and time considerate. MMORPGs are effectively D&D without the need for someone to be a "DM" and thus removed from the play of the game. There are still puzzles and such in MMORPGs -- is it exactly like D&D equivalents? No. There are still pretty heavy limits to MMORPGS i.e. puzzles, thoughtful plots, cultural developments. But, one really good thing is that people have a very hard time cheating and effectively attempting to ruin the game for everyone.
There are things in MMORPG's that tabletops don't have like macro and micro economies, political guilds, and mercantilism.
What I think O-kemono is really getting at is the disconnect our society is really going through with the massive adaptation of the internet into our lives.
There is a great "TED TALK" by Sherry Turkle discussing this particular social realization called "Alone Together"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtLVCpZIiNs
Effectively the idea presented in this is "control" -- if we can control the amount attention or lack there of given by a group we feel "safe" and if we feel safe we feel "free."
This is no different than the concept of anonymity on the internet. We feel safe to speak our minds because there is little to no reprisal if we offend.

Play Munchkin! Well maybe not Munchkin, I actually don't like the game =P But board games are fantastic.
I actually find my life a bit of the opposite. If something is happening in the real world, and board games was often it, I'd cancle any online plans I had in order to go do the other thing instead. Then again, even though I'm obsessed with Multiplayer Video Gaming and it was 6 years of my career life too.... I always found sitting around a table with 4 to 6 friends playing board games to be far more enjoyable. We always made time for it

Seeing this piece I must say the following.
Among my furry friends it is a standard to play BOARD GAMES during furmeets. I guess it depends on country and culture, but that's how we roll. I do enjoy PC/console games now and then, but meeting with other people in person just to stare in some kind of handheld device is just plain stupid. Board games FTW!

THIS IS PRICELESS.
Few years ago (say 5 to 7) our family meeting was like: big table, good food, everyone chatting each other with cheerful expressions.
Now, it's like: small coffetable, (UN)frozen quickmeals, everyone sitting with numb faces and tapping their phones.

*Goes over and plays with the little one and their board game*
I live in a house full of gamer nerds, but from time to time, we'll leave our computers alone to play Cards Against Humanity or Munchkin. He'll, even the fiancee and I will bust out our old Yugioh decks and have at it. I'm glad to see that there are other people out there that take the time to walk away from electronic games and play awesome old school ones (I recently found Mouse Trap at a flea market and I've got the house playing)

Now I maybe a big time Gamer but I do have physical friends I hang out with and talk about video games and hilarious random topics and understand this completly. Thankfully ever since I started college, I've made some friends and hung out more with others so I've made sure to try not and let gaming take over my life completly, this can also be thanks to not having my own Internet connection for most of my childhood and teenage years.
This is an illustration as adorable as it is woefully truthful. In my own experience as an "old-fashioned" gamer, I have often attempted to play with my friends and get them involved in activities of which I love - namely board games! Board games can be wonderful fun and interactive, especially if the board game is based on cooperative play. I enjoy Arkham Horror for its focus on all players aiding one another in a common goal - plus it was hilarious how when I play Silas Marsh I got killed by deep ones. How ironic. Regardless, it saddens me that electronic gaming is replacing the more personal games of which I love. >.>
Thank you for drawing this marvelous illustration! :D
