Hmm, ok. Have you tried other tools or playing around with the settings (with the advanced settings checked to unlock rest of the options) to find a suitable replacement?

Well, try then. :P

A simple pen with low density (around 10), softest possible edges and minimum density of 0 (from advanced settings) makes for a pretty decent soft shading tool, at least that's what I usually use.
