Someday I would love to take a cross country trip by train...just something I always wanted to do... the kind with the cool passenger cars and what not. I am not sure if they even exist anymore.

Not sure about cross country but my parents (yes, they come up in another message!) have raved about taking the Amtrak train from San Antonio to Houston.
The thing is, I look at train sites, and there seems to be alot of, take train A to bus station B. Not many direct routes anymore.

I think the only train you can take across country in is Amtrak.
But every once in a while they do run steam engines with passenger cars, but I don't think they go across country. I saw one go from Dallas to Oklahoma City several years ago. But I don't know if that is still running.
