So for once, a my little pony character of mine who actually isn't from another world - she's ro the outskirts of Ponyville in the more rural areas. I actually sorta saw this in a dream I had last night where I was Nickel Steel and met several ponies. o.O
And yes I remember commenting about how her hat made her look like Theodora, which resulted in her saying "...Who?" and I forgot. I'm not in Kansas anymore. There is also a reason that cherry Plum is not depicted with ears - she had just been given the hat and was looking to have holes cut in it.

In the rural outskirts of Ponyville, there is another orchard - it doesn't have any famous name like "Sweet Apple Acres" does, but instead harvests fruit from various kinds of trees. This fruit is the "Plum". The Prunus family is known for providing these juicy fruits with the disgustingly hard pits to Ponyville, like they have for well, as long as the Apple family has.
However in recent years, an outsider was brought in and was married to the Prunus's only daughter - with him he brought five Cherry saplings as a wedding present from his own family from the south. (Thus, Cherry Plum is actually a distant relative to Cherry Jubilee) Their focus remained Plums, first and foremost, but now with the addition of a rather similarly hard-pitted fruit called the Cherry.
One interesting discovery, that lead to Cherry Plum's name is a kind of plum that looked a little like a cherry. However it tasted a little more like a plum. It was only fitting that this became her cutie mark. It was also fitting that the purple leaves on some of the plants matched her mane as well.
Amusingly enough, Cherry Plum left to head to Canterlot - allegedly there was a kind of fruit similar to a Plum and a Cherry called a "Nectarine". This exotic fruit is eaten as a delicacy in Canterlot. But several ponies give a rather odd look at her comically wide-brimmed hat - which on the plus side does act as a parachute. However she really really needs to get holes cut in it for her ears.
