Ok, it's been a long time coming. (sort of...) but I have to confess, I do watch MLP. I don't know if I would be considered a "brony" or not, but I do enjoy the show. I was skeptical at first, but after watching a few episodes it grew on me.
So don't be haters!!!
Anyway, one thing I noticed from watching the show was the train... And I think they could have done a better job. They could have at least put a main rod leading from the pistons to the drive wheels!!
In any case, I decided to draw a proper locomotive that could feasibly exist within the world of MLP and this is the end result. I think I got a little carried away with some of the details. I tried to simplify it as much as possible... but I'm a stickler for the little details, I couldn't help myself.
The goal was to design a whimsical 4-4-0 that could actually exist. No prototype of builder practice inspired this. I looked at the train from the show and started from scratch. Everything came out of my head, freelance. Using what little I know about locomotives and such. The canted cylinders are a note drawn from Norris practice, I must confess. As is the "Half Moon" smoke box door. (which sadly can't be seen clearly since it is a side profile)
The canted cylinders, half moon smoke box door, and two axle tender I thought would enhance the whimsical nature I was shooting for. I think I did alright. I also went with coal rather than wood as a fuel source.
The "elaborate" placard between the drivers is, in fact, the builders plate. Made of cast brass there is one on each side. The builder is the "Grand Western Iron Works", newly established outside of Ponyville. *delving into a little bit of personal fiction there.*
I'm considering making a colored version of this, though just not sure what to use. I want it to be realistic, but still whimsical. I'm open to suggestions.
I would also like to apologize for the poor scan quality. A friend accidentally spilled a little water on it, so in order to remove the "Shadows" that resulted with the original scan I had to change a lot of settings. This was the best I could make it.
Regardless, I hope you like it!

The MLP train runs on the fire of friendship. :)
I totally agree with you that there should be driving rods on the train in the show.
Or at least a building somewhere that reads "repair shed"
I'm also waiting for a train focused episode. Like say it comes to life and acts all evil.

Their train still needs some work, or at least their first one.
It was blatantly modeled after the W&A "General". ^^;

Maybe you should do the second engine; the one that made it's first big appearance on the bridge. It's basically this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped.....steam_loco.jpg in very tired paint job, and it's an actual type of engine used on U.P.
Nice little engine. I plan yo submit my two versions based on the Jupiter from the Lone Ranger: http://www.flickr.com/photos/554530.....-f4LcbU-e1yPXn or with the small Mexican engine I did before: http://kendallcollins.deviantart.co.....fied-409356691 in a goofy western backdate, with tender trucks taken from a Central Pacific locomotive: http://www.cprr.org/Museum/Locomotives/
Thank you for that. Ever since making this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12786048/ I'm planning to show off the other two engines; a C-19 and T-12.
