They're such lovely dogs, but a handful owned by some very unpleasant people, sadly. It breaks my heart to think of dogs being bred or used for fighting, especially so when they're such loving dogs as staffies. Kept as a family pet they're as lovely as you'd ever wish a dog to be, especially with children. The problem is so bad in the UK that the most well-known animal shelter in the country had to do a PR campaign on behalf of staffies recently. http://www.battersea.org.uk/dogs/st.....han_you_think/ They're inundated with staffies that people bought as a fashion accessory to make themselves look "tough" then got bored with. :(
It's true that there's only one true "Pit Bull" (the APBT), but the truth of the matter is that we've got 20+ years of the term being used in a slang sense to basically label anything with short hair, square head, and broad chest as a "pit bull". The AmStaff, APBT, and Staffy Bull being the three most commonly labeled as such, probably because they're all related in one way or another.
I did think about that - being a big bully fan myself, but there are so many other breeds which could/should be included in a general bull breed group that I went with just genero 'pit bull' which is the common use term (though not correct, technically of course) for these three breeds. I did do a poll with a whole bunch of 'pittie' owners and it was agreed to stick with the nomenclature. Believe me I thought about it, though!
