Continuing with my sketching practice, I sketched my son's shoe. I don't think I got the proportions right, but I really tried to pay attention to smaller details.
I finally went and bought myself some real pencils: 2H, 2B, and HB. I can already see how much of a difference it makes--I do the base sketching and light shading with the 2B, and fill in darker/thicker areas with the 2H.

Very well done.
One thing is new to me, though:
I always used the softer 2B-pencils for shading (the darker areas) and the base sketch with the harder 2H...
What I experienced is that the harder pencils can do finer lines and can easily ereased, whereas softer pencils make bold lines and "color" very intensively what makes them ideal for shading, where dark areas are needed.
But maybe I did it wrong all the time - what are your experiences with the different pencils?
*curiousity*
