Dragonwuff Attack!
Though Vrghr has mellowed a lot in recent years, he wasn't always the overweight, jovial, chef and "inflatable marshmallow of a wuff".
In his youth, he used to be quite the adventurer.
He hooked up with a very motley group of folks who were adventuring in the Northern Wilderness. They'd taken it upon themselves to put an end to the slave trade of the city of Hellsforge, and took to attacking the slaver caravans every time they caught them venturing into the Northern territory, hunting down the locals to auction off later.
The group became known as the "Red Ribbon Irregulars", from the time they'd teamed up with a bunch of local town's-folk to mount a raid on a nearby caravan. Not having anything like uniforms, one of the adventurer's suggested tying a ribbon on each of the "good guys" so the towns people wouldn't get confused in the midst of battle.
Vrghrs adventurer's adopted the tactic, and left a red ribbon or two behind, prominently displayed on a spear stuck in the ground near the smoking remains of the destroyed slaver's wagons, or on similar gear.
The slavers didn't take this laying down; they began hiring guards and others to protect their caravans on those expeditions. But that didn't stop the destruction. It just made the job more challenging. And the slavers lost profits as they hired more and more guards, and began adding mages and others to the mix.
Here we have Vrghr leading a surprise attack on one such later caravan. The wuff made a great "first wave" for those: He could attack in near silence - the fur on the leading edges of his wings muffled the wind noise like the down of owls' wings. Flight meant that he could swoop in and out before many of the guards could load a crossbow or bring arrows to bear, and it kept him out of melee range.
As for the mages, a fast-moving target is hard to hit, and he had the advantage of being able to channel and redirect electricity and other magical energies.
As the caravans reacted to his surprise attack, his friends would spring their own ambush from the flanks. When the guards turned to those, the wuff would swoop in for another run, breath weapon freezing foes and fogging the scene to provide cover for his friends.
Here we see Vrghr on his initial run, eyes blazing in rage, breath of bitter cold, like liquid nitrogen, gushing toward a cleric and a mage who are returning fire.
The cleric's lightning leaps from his staff, only to crackle across the membranes of the wuff's wings and arc back at the ground. The wuff banks to avoid a hail of magic darts from the mage. His friends have yet to leap from cover, but the chaos is already mounting.
Soon there will be nothing but wrecked wagons, torn up ground, and a lonely pike with a sporty red ribbon twisting in the breeze announcing the freedom of yet another shipment of slaves, and a rising ire on the part of the slavers back at Hellsforge! The Red Ribbon Irregulars strikes again!
This wonderful art is a commission from
Sugarboy and posted with his permission. Wuff is absolutely delighted at the results. A most unusual depiction of the "currently civilized, chubby dragonwuffy". But a look into his past, and the predator that still lurks under all that padding today.

I saw Sugarboy's upload just a bit ago and the smidgeon of story he had there for it and was not expecting a microyarn like this for the full telling. Only 3 words to fully describe...
I'm loving this.
It's also, as strange as this may sound, very, very close to a few of the general arcs I'd been putting together for that animation I'd mentioned in stream a week or two ago and where I'd been trying to weave the wulf into the tale. My jaw has hit the table at this point and has gotten a few new cogs turning. With luck, sunday will return the streaming and some more visual work might be shown. Mostly been working on maps and locations as well as the general story of things and this just jumpstarted a new strand.

Glad you enjoyed that little "micro tale". Wuff wrote a rather longer clip to Sugarboy, to provide the setting and inspiration for this image. He took the "feeling" and ideas along with the specific elements wuffy mentioned, and created this wonderful result!
*Vrghr's ears perk up* Didn't know you were trending so close to these ideas in your animation's plot! Always happy to inspire a fellow writer and artist! *grins*
The "Red Ribbon" folks really have a varied and interesting past. They were quite the "motley" group of adventurer's too - wuffy was by no means the most unusual looking or odd one in that group. Sugarboy was originally thinking of sneaking a cameo of one or more into the scene somewhere, but the setting didn't lend itself to that. Wuff personally suspects that some of their wild appearances "scared him off" as well. *chuckles*
Maybe wuff needs to scribble some of this stuff down one day. Perhaps some folks out there would enjoy a touch of the old "sword and sorcery" silliness, even though a lot of that stuff has fallen out of vogue these days.

Here's a sumarized bit I had going before this post. I'll let you tell me if we're in the same boats. Illicit fountain dragon trade is still a big issue in some of the northern reaches of the land. It's fairly well known that the trading happens, but the regents in charge of the landscape are more concerned with garnering more power then they are with advancing their land to current doctrines. The frozen north is more often then not under the charge of raiders, traiders, and various other organizations. The crew go here to see what they can find out about the errant who assaulted Bing after tips gathered around the port of Baeville hint that he may have gone there to sell his prizes.
It was around here that I was thinking of having Vrghr come in. Initially to be a guide in these northern lands, but....
after seeing this....
Methinks I have a differing arc in mind....

Wow! This SO plays into the mind-set of our old adventuring group; to put the 'kibosh' on illegal trade in the North, preying on those not protected by the forces present for that in the more "civilized" areas of the land! In wuff's old world, "Hellsforge" was a center of illicit activity, capital of their own kingdom, and about as corrupt a government as you'd fear to ever see. They'd run caravans over the mountains into the wild lands of the North, and round up civilians there for sales in the slave markets. Because most of the Northerners were 'monstrous' in appearance, at least by human definitions, they were regarded as 'beasts' to the more human-settled Southerner lands. So, while frowned upon, a lot of the settled Southern areas turned a blind eye toward the slave trade in Northern races even if there were laws against human slavery in their own area. This left loose affiliations, "clans" and similar groupings, and adventurers like the "Red Ribbons" as the only options for those Northerners seeking to protect themselves from exploitation by Hellsforge and others. (At least at first. In wuff's world, a charismatic, aggressive, and smart Wolfen by the name of Griss eventually rallied many of the clans and races, and mounted an offensive against these incursions. He became a War Lord in the Northern Wilderness, and pretty much ended the slave trade within his borders. Of course, most of the Southerners saw this new "power" in the North as a potential threat - and Vrghr's adventures took quite a different turn of plot from there. But that's a whole 'nother story! *grins*)
So, while certainly not the same story as yours, the concepts and relationships and conflicts remain very much within the same ideas.
Vrghr would certainly make an excellent 'guide' for an area like that, and would by happy to accept that job. But wuff could certainly see the situation growing more 'action oriented' as Vrghr learned what was going on with the fountain dragons. They might find that their "guide" had connections to "the resistance" (for lack of better term at the moment), with guide being just a "day job" or "cover" for his more militant, secret work.
So many possibilities and directions you could go! *grins* And yes, wuff would be honored and thrilled to have a part in there, whether a guide or something more. Glad to have been of inspiration in your ideas and plots! *bounces happily*
