Just trying to figure out how people paint those amazing, ultra-detailed anime style eyes in digital paintings. Also trying out Paint Tool Sai. I'm loving it! ^-^

In effect they treat the eye like a glossy sphere and create the highlights based on that, in effect either creating (or finding a close approximation in photos of) the scene the character sees and using it to create the highlights on a sphere which they map over the eyes.

That's one example of how to do it, but coming from the 3D gaming world I know that there's hundreds of freely available 'Skybox' textures out there, that can be quickly mapped to a sphere to get something to work from as reference to draw the highlights as well. The macro-lens-like reflection is tricky to visualize versus normal perspective drawing.
