As more and more young upcoming racing drivers are making their debut in real-world racing having started from simracing, its becoming more relevant than ever before with an ever-growing community worldwide.
Q: What is 'simracing'?
A: Simracing, short for simulation racing (obviously) is a branch of racing game where the focus is on accuracy of physics and true-to-life disciplines. So no, it does not include arcade racers like Forza Horizon or Need For Speed. There is a fuzzy area of racing games otherwise called "simcades" which blend aspects of full-on simulation titles and arcade physics, like Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo Sport and the DiRT games (not to be confused with the DiRT Rally series which can be considered a simulation title). Simcades can be played with either a gamepad or a steering wheel. Proper simulation titles more or less require a steering wheel to be usable.
Q: What are 'proper' simulation titles?
A: Any of these names - iRacing, Assetto Corsa, rFactor (2), Automobilista, Project Cars, or the DiRT Rally series. (if you're still stuck in time, maybe even Richard Burns Rally.)
The F1 games are confusing; in recent years (2018 onwards) they have been marketing themselves as being more sim-like, however they are still fairly well optimised for gamepads and you would never see an F1 development simulator use F1 2020 as the software.
iRacing is a subscription based service and is the software used by almost all real-life professional racing drivers from all walks of life and is regarded as the platinum standard in quality motorsport simulations.
Q: How can I get started in simracing?
I recommend Chris Haye's channel to learn almost everything you need to know about simracing.
But as a TL;DR, here's what I can tell you about software and hardware. Do not jump into iRacing straight away as a complete noob, because that's like being taught to skateboard before you can walk. My personal preference of starter sim is Assetto Corsa for its unbelievably expansive modding community and forums. You will have no shortage of getting help and resources or finding even more communities within AC. (DO NOT confuse it with the Competizione title! That is the official Blancpain and IGTC GT3 game which focuses exclusively on the GT class.)
As for hardware, the best starter wheels are on team Thrustmaster or team Logitech with the T300RS/GT and G27/G29 wheels respectively. I would read reviews of each wheel and make your own decision if I were you. DO NOT LOOK OUTSIDE THESE WHEELS TO START WITH. No more, no less. If the cost of a brand new wheel seems steep to you, looking on the used market is a viable option as well.
