The post reads as follows:

New York's new age verification law could ban anyone under the age of 18 from using messaging apps, or using chatting features in video games.

The proposed law, called the Stop Online Predators Act, would require platforms to check user ages.

For anyone under 18, private messages from people they do not know would be turned off by default.

Kids could still chat privately with friends they have already added and Parents could choose to allow more open chatting if they want.

The bill aims to stop unknown adults from easily contacting children while keeping normal friendships possible.

It has passed one Senate committee and moved to another. It has support from the governor but is not yet a law.

A small rant; Love how these people in gov't name their shit after something serious to paint the opposition of the bill as something else. That to me on its own merit tells me this bill ain't what it promises to be.

The problem here is that YOU have to put your own identity at risk just to use the internet, and while yes we'll have people who say; They already got it and yada-yada, but that's not an excuse to not do anything, shit like that is how it gets worse in the first place.

Anyway given this is yet again demanding more of you sacrificing your data and bullshit this is a bad bill, no amount of 'privacy assurance this' or that isn't good enough, I can tell some politicians are maybe


trying to skirt the line, but the only better approach in my view;


You guys know what to do; contact your state reps and tell em to stop this, cause it's not going to protect kids despite its promises, and despite its name. Feel free to use the 3 things I stated below to tell your reps how to actually keep kids sage, WITHOUT the bullshit.


1-Companies have to teach their customers how to use parental controls that ALREADY EXIST in the devices, and if not get some new ones, or regularly send messages, emails, whatever to help keep parents in the loop.

2- Schools have to teach kids how to be safe online and it should be mandatory for funding

3- do not allow data collection from any NGO that doesn't handle insurance and the gov't DEFINITELY can't collect info or data without a warrant.



I'm not gonna pretend those 3 things are fool proof, but it's WAAY better than just having yet more ways to lose your privacy cause big tech wants you to own fucking NOTHING not even your own computer, stomp competition or Lord knows what, and def better than bad politicians wanting to stop people calling out their BS.
