I did it again UPDATED
General | Posted 15 years agoNeeding Shakespearean help NEVERMIND
General | Posted 15 years agoThe line is from a female character, after some sort of tragic revelation. The gist is that the bad things which have happened will pass over/through her and leave her who she is. I swear the phrase "[name] will remain" is used, but having checked the most likely sources, I could not find it.
So I obviously do not know what this is. :/ The plays I know best are Hamlet, R&J, Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth. But I really think it's either Ophelia or Juliet who says it.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT D:
UPDATE 1: I've searched all Ophelia and Juliet's lines. No dice. Next up, Beatrice and Lady Macbeth. Tomorrow, perhaps.
ANSWER: It's not Shakespeare at all, it's from Galadriel in Lord of the Rings: "I passed the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel."
Don't click links in journals
General | Posted 15 years agoThe URL is something like astro something coolbeans. It'll be the only thing in the journal.
Apparently it will spam your account with a journal with the link
For more info, check out the thread on the forums. This apparently doesn't work immediately (or else it just didn't work for me), because I have yet to post the bad journal.
UPDATE: According to their Twitter account, they fixed it, but according to Eeve (that troll, lol), they haven't. I'm more willing to believe him at this point.

Fandoms I have written for
General | Posted 15 years agoI don't know why, I just started thinking about this and decided to share it with you all. Not necessarily in chronological order.
Star Fox- duh; this is only the one I talk about all the time; I wrote a ton of shit for this and was heavily into it until... there weren't any new Star Fox games and stopped giving a damn
X-Files- I think I only completed one actual fic, and it was a Whitewolf crossover with friend insertion characters; that is not meant to sound as gay as it does; my mom writes X-Files fanfic and it's all my fault
Whitewolf/World of Darkness- I wrote a handful back in high school, including some apparent crossovers with Star Fox; ugh
Redwall- I participated in a Redwall-themed RP board once, but all I have are a couple character intros and some stuff featuring Redknell, who I resurrected for that one contest I didn't win
NeoPets- wow; a former online girlfriend got me into this; I wrote exactly one fic, about my pets; it's kind of cute
Super Mario Bros.- this was a big mistake, and I regret it
Pokemon- I never actually finished this; I almost want to
Bleach- you've all seen this one; I wouldn't actually count it, since it's supposed to be ironic and self-aware and all
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic- duh; this is only the one I talk about all the time; I'm currently writing five different fics at the same time; somebody help, my head is full of poni

Death of the Author
General | Posted 15 years agoTHIS IS THE THING I KEEP TALKING ABOUT
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_the_Author
Roland Barthes. Death of the Author. The reader as sole creator of meaning in literature. This is that thing I keep referring to without ever being able to cite or flesh it out. I didn't read this article. Skim it. This is the thing. I keep talking about it, I'm just gonna leave it here.

On writing as self-expression
General | Posted 15 years agoThis has been bothering me for a while. I thought of this a while ago and I just can't seem to let it go.
Consider this scenario: You're enrolled in a college creative writing course. It's the first day. What always happens on the first day of college classes? Introductions. And since this is creative writing 101, or intro to fiction, or somesuch, inevitably the question will come up during introductions: Why do you write?
And you know what a lot of people are going to say? "I write to express myself."
This, it has occured to me, is horribly self-indulgent.
Why must writing consist solely of self-expression?
Oughtn't writing to be more about telling stories? Certainly, elements of one's personality, beliefs, and ideas are what these stories will based around, what will make them unique and exciting, but that placement of the inner self onto paper should not, nor, I think, should it ever, be the primary or sole focus of writing.
The fact is, no one writes for themselves. Anyone who tells you they do is lying from the moment they let you read their work. True self expression is its own reward. You put the words on the paper, and you're done. You don't need to edit, you don't need feedback, it's just a state of masturbation, simply you and the words, alone and unobserved. (And I don't use that word to denigrate the process, it can certainly be cathartic or artistic, but you and I both know of the self-indulgent writer, and writing self-indulgently tends to lead towards literary self-gratification.)
It is, of course, difficult to write in a vaccuum. We all want to be the next Stephen King or Ernest Hemingway or, shudder, Stephanie Meyers. Worse, we want people to love and respect us because we're good at stabbing words until they stop screaming. Writers want attention; if they didn't, they wouldn't be on websites like this, begging for it.
Oh sure, we know there's barely any money to be made in writing, and we may pretend like we don't care if we're popular. "Look at those douchebags, all they do is write porn! Thank god I only have a hundred watchers, quality over quantity!" But secretly, deep down, we want to be the ones writing the porn, even if the comments it generates aren't the most constructive or well-written. Because when we see the digits in front of that little C in the top-right corner climb higher, we get a little wet.
Now, this whole rant is not meant to downplay or anger or anything else. So let me make a suggestion. What should writing be, if not self-expression? The answer is, there are many answers. Writing can be many things; storytelling, for instance, as I mentioned previously. The important thing is to know what your purpose, and similarly, your audience, is. And while self-expression should never be purpose, this is not to say that the self should be left out of writing entirely. Indeed, personal memoirs can be uplifting, inspiring, or downright hilarious when written well, with purpose and audience in mind.
(I think a lot about audience, I don't know why it's so important to me, but it is.)
My suggestion to you? After you're done getting defensive, saying things like, "Well, I certainly don't act like that!" and have taken some time to really analyze why you write, embrace your self-indulgent side. No, better yet, slap it around. Tie it to a chair. Leave it alone in your basement with no lights on until it begs for mercy, and then crack a bullwhip over its head while you put it work fulfilling your purpose. Don't suppress it, use it. It's a part of all of us, and it's a part of all of our writing. The more we deny it, the more we make ourselves miserable. It's time to let go of the pretention of selflessness and start acepting that we write what we want because it makes other people happy.
Please discuss. I'd love to have a real conversation start over this.

Mnemonic devices
General | Posted 15 years agoI have never been able to keep Memorial Day and Labor Day straight. So today, I wrote a little poem that I want to share with you.
Memorial dAY comes in M-A-Y MAY,
and that ought to help you remember
that Labor Day is the holiday
which comes in the month of September.
If you do not live in the United States, this will not be useful, but for the rest of you, there you go! :D

On leading a triple life
General | Posted 15 years agoDue to recent events, I thought back over all the names I've used online. Here's a short list.
-D'nel the ex-Mage: What was I thinking? I was 16. I was REALLY into the Dragonriders of Pern. This was my first online name, used on dragon RP boards and (eventually only) the writing community I stumbled across via Nintendo's BBInsider forums. I think that's what they were called. As a character, he was pretty much what you'd expect from a dragon-obsessed 16-year-old.
-Take Walker: Oh hey, I still use this name! :D But once, I actually went by the full name Doesn't-Take-Sides. Yeah, I don't really keep that one around anymore. (God, don't ask about "Doesn't-Take-Sides the N64Philodox".) That was mostly on Whitewolf RP boards. I'm so glad I don't RP anymore. I use Take pretty much everywhere nowadays.
-fnfnfnfnfn: lol, I just thought of this. My YTMND account! I wanted something suitably trolly/4channish.
-TL333s: This is my super-secret name. I use it for forums that I need an account on (the Escapist comes to mind), where I don't plan on posting much and don't want things linked back to my furry name. The only time I used it as a main identity was after returning to the Ohio DDR board after ragequitting. :B
-My real name: Some of you might know it. It's very uncommon (despite the fact that I'm named after my dad), so I prefer not to use it, since anything I do under it can easily be traced back to me/my family. It is, however, an online name, because Facebook.
-Present Perfect: I feel like I'm missing a few between this and the last one. c.c Well, anyway, this is my newest one, used for pony stuff, including self-insert fanfics, lol. Based off linguistics/writing/perfectionism. I actually split myself into three ponies when trying to decide on a personal character; Present represents my neurotic side and has become my primary name. There's also Center Stage, which I've yet to use as an actual handle online, but I plan to once I can record decent videos of me playing music. :3 He represents my attention-whoring side and is a rock star (pics to come).
---
To address the title of this journal directly, I am currently living a triple life online, and it's weird. I don't mind talking about RL or pony stuff here, because y'all don't give a damn and I'm comfortable in the furry community. I also feel, perhaps wrongly so, that this is a fairly private site and so my info isn't about to leak out into general Google searches or whatnot. I mean, it would be easy to link my real name to this account, but it would take some serious searching. I think I'm doing pretty well at keeping the two separate.
What's harder is keeping the furry stuff out of the pony stuff. Bronies, from what I've seen, hate furries. Or at least, a sizable chunk of them are willing to cause massive drama if anypony outs themselves as furry. So I am walking on fucking eggshells around Ponychan and all the other sites, trying my best not to even mention anything that might link me back to this name. This gets harder on DeviantArt, where I'm using the TakeWalker name and commenting on various pony-related things. The goal there is just to keep TakeWalker and PresentPerfect separate. I'm doing okay so far, but it's hard.
The funny thing is, brony fandom is supposed to be all about love and friendship and tolerance, but I'm so used to furries being on the ass-end of the social ladder that this never struck me as hypocritical until some random brony pointed it out. So yes, it does bother me, and it makes life difficult, but I sally forth.
And of course, I keep both of those separate from my RL stuff. I have a few furries friended on Facebook, but they're more or less discreet enough that no one would ever think twice about the connection. I have ONE pony-related thing (Daniel Ingram, the composer; more on him later) friended. Again, would require some digging. But the fact is, I would rather come out as a brony than a furry to my RL people. D: What does that say?
So, yes. Triple life. Always exciting. :V

Confound these ponies!
General | Posted 15 years agoOh god. I am a terrible person. I had this idea pretty much from the moment I knew that one could make ponies that looked more or less like they do in the show.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.....ker/oarmlp.png
This may be a cry for help, I don't know.
Made with this generator: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5752737 , a bunch of GIS'd cutie marks and over 9000 hours in Paint Shop Pro. Seriously. Look at his itty hat! It's terrible! I made that. :B That's why.
Confound these ponies, they drive me to photoshop! D: I could have been doing something else for the last half hour!
Wait, nevermind, I'm a genius. CLICK HERE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THESE THREE ARE!

You can't fly with your eyelids
General | Posted 15 years agoBut boy, are my eyes tired. x.x I just finished my music add, by marathonning six folders (~250 songs) back to back. It was crazy, but it took half the time it would have using my old system. So now I can get back to listening to my downloaded stuff, download more stuff and hey, maybe even do another ILM!
"I Will Follow You Into the Dark" gets me really emotional. ;_;
Also, out of the 380 new songs I added this time around, two are about unicorns. Just sayin'.

What the hell is Homestuck
General | Posted 15 years agoI see this all over the pony boards, as well as furry.
WHAT IS
I tried going there once, but it was like a video game? Do you have to play all the way through to know what all these references are?

Now for the second question
General | Posted 15 years agoIs anyone interested in seeing my My Little Pony fanfics? c.c Yes, I'm writing them. Almost finished my first one, in fact. I don't know if too many of my watchers are actually into the show, and I will not take it badly if the answer is 'no'. I would just rather not annoy you with fan material if you'd rather not see it.
I promise I'm working on not-fanfics, too.

Music shout-out!
General | Posted 15 years agoWould you be interested?
General | Posted 15 years agoSo today I spent like four hours going through my "Stories" folder and cataloging everything, including what pieces I think are good for publication, with varying amounts of rewriting. Though I didn't catalog them, this did include going through my fanfics, some of which I started reading, and, well...
I kinda like a few of these. c.c Would anyone be interested in seeing my old Star Fox fanfiction? I don't know if anyone here is even all that into it, so that's why I'm asking.

Webcams
General | Posted 15 years agoI'm researching microphones seriously now, because my birthday's coming up and that's about all I want.
Well, that and a webcam.
So since the mic thing got started here, I might as well ask: those of you who own a webcam, what do you use? Is it any good? I don't even know what to look for, other than "plugs into computer" and "makes videos". :B
