Chapter 7: Hard Relations
Buck didn’t know how to react to being invited to play outside with other kids. He didn’t know how to react to his father letting him do as he pleased for the first time. He also didn’t know how to play basketball.
Either way, his tail flicked and wings tensed on his back when he registered the question asked,
“O-oh, yeah! Of course, I mean unless you don’t want me to sir...”
Buck looked towards his father who was still standing at the door, his arms crossed. Bruce’s eyes were annoyed and in a tipsy stupor,
“I don’t give a damn, but don’t be surprised if the door is locked when you come back.”
Ghozt looked up at the taller horse, a curious eyebrow raised. He looked like he was about to say something, but his paws brought the ball up to his muzzle, silencing him. Buck silently nodded and looked to the monkey standing in the door.
“Let me just go put on some gym clothes.” He gestured to his tank top which clung closely to his toned body. It was too big for him, most likely a hand-me-down from his father, and covered his red shorts. Turning around, he quickly walked to his room, his mind racing on how he was supposed to play the game.
“I don’t even know how to dribble… What if I don’t make any shots? Will they say my wings are too-”
“I can teach you how to dribble.”
Buck’s eyes widened as he quickly turned around, his hooves inside his drawer. He saw Ghozt leaned on his bedroom door frame, smirking as he looked around the room.
“W-w-what are you-”
“You talk a lot. Especially to yourself...”
The monkey walked into the room slowly, still glancing at the almost bare walls of Buck’s room. Buck himself was staring at the kid, his train of thought crashing in a continuous explosion of cars. Shaking his head, Buck finally uttered his words while he still tried to figure out why the stranger took it upon himself to walk into his room, let alone his house, without a second thought.
“Come on, everyone is waiting outside. Get dressed.”
Buck’s brow furrowed, his ears splaying down. Did the kid expect him to change in front of a random person. He may have been a child himself but he still liked privacy when he could have it. He pointed a finger down at the ground, twirling it around as he stared at the monkey. Ghozt got the message to turn around and he rolled his eyes, while facing away from Buck.
“My dad didn’t object to you just walking in here?”
“Nah, he left the door open so I took it as an invitation. He went and sat back in that chair in the living room. Some cooking show.”
As Ghozt was speaking, Buck pulled his homey clothes off his body quickly, still facing his dresser. He could hear Ghozt’s shoes tapping on the wooden floor patiently. Glancing back quickly, Buck saw his facing away, but studying the minimal amount of posters on the wall.
“You ever do any sports?”
“Uh… no not really...”
Buck had a flashback to his last fight, his fist smashing in the skull of the bull. He shivered as he felt the fabric of red athletic shorts going up his legs. They were the same ones that he usually wore to train in the basement. He shook his head again, his mane flopping from side to side.
“Do you do any sports?”
Ghozt chuckled and spun the basketball on one finger, the monkey’s tail flicking back and forth just above the floor, causing his blue athletic shorts to shift from side to side on his waist.
“Maybe just a little.”
Buck pulled a white short sleeve t-shirt over his head, his ears popping out from the top. He sighed aloud and turned around to face Ghozt, expecting to see his back.
Instead, Ghozt was already turned around, holding the ball to his side with one arm,
“Can you actually fly?”
The primate had been gawking at Buck’s wings, making the young stallion blush slightly from the amount of curiosity oozing from Ghozt. Buck just nodded and made his wings fold to stay within his frame, and not poke out from his sides. Buck watched Ghozt’s head tilt to the side, an eyebrow raised before he pulled to ball up in front of himself again, smiling.
“Well, flying isn’t allowed in basketball. Wouldn’t be fair yeah?”
Buck chuckled,
“I guess so… but I’m actually not familiar with all of the rules.”
“I’ll teach ya mate… maybe after I score a few shots on you, hehe...”
Ghozt started walking out of the room, and Buck followed, putting his wings out halfway while following. They walked past the living room, silently. Buck looked to the left and saw his dad enjoying the cooking show aforementioned. Buck paused slightly and Ghozt kept walking to the door, looking back to see Buck’s sudden halt. He slowed down as well as he raised an eyebrow in question, but he didn’t say anything. Buck looked from the front, open, freeing door back to his harsh, unloving, evil father. He thought to himself quickly, having a 5 minute discussion with himself in the span on a few seconds.
He looked away from his dad and walked out the door.
As Ghozt followed closing the door, he bounced the ball on the pavement of the sidewalk slowly, its bouncing echoing slightly around he looked at Buck from behind,
“What was the sudden pause for there mate?”
“Just deciding on whether or not I should’ve done something. Nothing important.”
Buck spoke quickly and looked back to watch Ghozt dribbling the ball with slight ease. He wasn’t doing any fancy tricks, but he didn’t have to look down at what he was doing.
“Well, okay then. Lets go meet everyone. I’ll introduce ya.”
Smiling softly, Ghozt walked ahead, his tail wrapping around his waist as he kept dribbling the ball. Buck followed quickly and they both walked a couple houses down, to the basketball court that Buck could see from his window. It felt weird to be out there. He had walked past this place before, but never been on the court, which was a driveway, before. He never had a reason too. Most of his time was spent training. Upon arriving at the basketball hoop, Buck saw a couple of other faces, all seeming very friendly and inviting.
“Hey, Noah, Liam. This here,” he pointed to Buck with a thumb, “Is Buck. Buck, this is Noah, and Liam.”
Noah was a leopard and Liam was a husky pup. They both gave their own version of saying hello. Noah threw up a piece sign grinning wildly, while Liam held out a closed fist to Buck, to which he responded by bumping his hoof with the other’s gently.
“Thanks for inviting me guys. Though I was telling Ghozt that I’m not really good at basketball.”
“Oh that fine, don’t worry. Liam here isn’t good either.”
Liam protested to Noah’s teasing
“Hey… I made a couple shots last game...”
“Yeah, they were lay-ups. Nothing far away from the net. And you used the backboard.”
Ghozt just stood there chuckling lightly at their banter. Buck couldn’t help but smile at how friendly all of them were being. Ghozt bounced the ball again, snapping the other two back to attention from arguing.
“Alright. Lets play a 2v2 game. Buck can be on my team, and you two can be on a team. Make it even in terms of skill.”
Noah rolled his eyes,
“We all know you’re still going to win even if you were by yourself.”
“Now now… you never know. Liam could actually make a couple lucky shots.”
Liam piped up again, huffing from the jokes.
Buck just quietly nodded and Ghozt handed the ball to him.
“Here, I’ll show you how to play Buck. Just do as I say.”
Buck took the ball into two hooves and bounced it repeatedly, his actions eliciting a snicker from both Liam and Noah. Ghozt just smiled warmly.
“First… lets work on that dribble...”
A couple of hours later, Buck was jumping in the air under the hoop trying to get the ball after it bounced from the rim. He was enjoying his time with the other 3 people his age. He hadn’t had so much fun in a long while. He wasn’t good, but he was able to muscle his way through Liam and Noah a couple times from his physical training and natural strength that came with his toned body. A couple of times, they both complained about his being too rough, which Ghozt would defend as him just being well-built. Buck was laughing, smiling, and getting to know the others well. He didn’t even notice his mother’s car was parked in the driveway already and had been for about half an hour.
Eventually, Ghozt and Buck won most of the games they played. Sitting down, all 4 of them laid in the grass that bordered the driveway, panting equally as hard from the amount of exertion. Buck lay with his hooves behind him as his head was back, looking up at the sky. His shirt clung to his chest from his sweating. Ghozt was laid completely back, both eyes screwed shut as he breathed heavily. The monkey’s arms were above his head as the ball sat on his stomach, rising and falling with each breath. Liam and Noah were back to back, leaned against each other, one with a knee propped up while the other was more ragdoll like.
“Hey…. Its getting… pretty late yeah….?”
Ghozt sat up slowly, sitting butterfly style in the grass. Buck nodded quietly, still breathing slightly hard. Noah and Liam just gave small noises as if to agree.
“We’d all better get home then. Don’t want out parents getting angry that we were out so late.”
“I don’t need to go home yet.”
Buck put a hoof over his muzzle after he suddenly spoke, his face flushing slightly. Liam looked towards Buck, his puppy blue eyes questioning him.
“You don’t have a bedtime?”
Buck just shook his head.
“Well what about-”
“It doesn’t matter anyways… right Liam…?”
Ghozt piped up smiling widely at Liam. Liam looked to Ghozt for a split second before keeping his mouth shut. Buck’s brow furrowed but he decided against questioning it. He had a lot of other things on his mind. He was still breathing hard, but not from the game. He was looking at the car parked in his driveway. He realized that his mom was home, and she didn’t know where he was. He also remembered he didn’t take the time to eat. His stomach grumbled from his epiphany of lack of food. Ghozt chuckled,
“You should get something to eat Buck. Your stomach is fighting ya. Don’t want your wings to shrink yeah?”
Buck slowly stood up, chuckling as well.
“No… I don’t want them to shrink, but I don’t think that is how nutrients work.”
“Yeah yeah… but still eat. You won’t have energy for the next time you play with us.”
Buck looked down at Ghozt, who was grinning at the horse in front of him. They wanted him to play again? He didn’t make a fool of himself?
“Y-yeah! For sure Ghozt...”
Noah spoke up, his ears perking up,
“Yeah, you’re better than Liam so it’s better you play with us.”
“Hey…. I’m not that bad you know...”
“Yeah. Right...”
They kept arguing as Ghozt shook his head in disbelief.
“I swear, they must be brothers in another life or something mate...”
Buck laughed out loud and started walking away from the group. He looked back and waved to his newly made friends, who all waved back. Ghozt waved the longest, his smile never fading. Now that Buck thought about it, Ghozt hadn’t frowned once during that entire encounter and time they played basketball. Almost like his smile was permanent. It wasn’t a bad thing though. In Buck’s opinion, he had a nice smile.
Waving back, Buck turned around and headed home. He walked up his steps, and jiggled the door to his house, pausing as he felt the door open with ease, as if it was slightly cracked open. As soon as Buck opened the door, the smell of beer hit his snout immediately. He looked down and saw a couple broken bottles and a glowing Phoenix feather laying by itself on the floor. Buck bent down to pick it up, stepping inside the door to close it behind him. He looked to his right, and didn’t see his father in his chair, but the television was still on. Buck’s ears laid down as he looked around, not knowing where either parent was.
“M-mom? Dad?”
He heard the sound of glass being moved around. The sound was coming from the basement, almost as if it was sliding against the concrete ground. Footsteps were then heard coming from the basement slowly. A slight glow emerged from the doorway as his mother walked up the stairs. Buck smiled seeing the glow emanating from the stairway.
His smile left when he saw what she looked like.
Glass was in her feathers, her head was bleeding profusely, dripping from her chin. Buck’s feet froze to the ground seeing her state.
“Buck? How was basketball honey? I saw you playing outside. I’m so happy you have friends now-”
“GET THE FUCK BACK DOWN HERE BITCH! I’M NOT DONE WITH YOU! LEAVE THAT DISRESPECTFUL FUCK UP THERE TO ROT!”
Buck’s eyes widened as he heard his father’s footsteps charge up the stairs, his mother stepping away from the door as it flew open. Bruce looked at Buck with a hateful glare, his eyes red with alcohol.
“I let you go outside, play with some kids, and you can’t even say ‘Thank you’ on your way out the door? I should’ve never let you go with that primate!”
Buck flinched from the yelling, looking down as his father belittled him. He didn’t even move when he heard his mother speak up,
“Bruce, it was his first time! You can’t expect him to be perfect!”
“And?! Who cares if it was his first time! He needs to know his place!”
“What, just like you need to know how to save money? You wasted all of our funds on a fight that could’ve ended your son’s life!”
Bruce snapped his head to the Phoenix, his eyes seething with rage.
“THAT WAS MY MONEY TO BEGIN WITH! WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH MY… MONEY!”
He charged into the kitchen, and Buck heard the shuffling of silverware being pushed around. Buck felt his back against the door as he fearfully backed away from the sight of his father walking angrily out of the kitchen, branding a knife in his hoof. Neither one of the two, Buck nor his mother, could react in time to what was to come next.
Buck watched in horror as his mother was tackled in the hallway. He watched in horror as he saw blood spray along the walls. He listened in horror at his mother’s painful screams filling the house until they stopped suddenly. He watched in horror as his father, sitting on top of his dead wife, shakily dropped the knife in his hooves, looking back at Buck, the same pain Buck heard from his mother’s wails within Bruce’s eyes. Buck listened in horror at the next words uttered from his father’s muzzle.
“This is your fault...”
Buck didn’t know how to react to being invited to play outside with other kids. He didn’t know how to react to his father letting him do as he pleased for the first time. He also didn’t know how to play basketball.
